Question about Microsoft Xbox Video Game Consoles & Games
Can't get on dashboard to play game and haven't been on it for hours i think i burned it out ?
When my Xbox had the red rings of death, I tried a number of options, however the only thing that worked was bringing it in for repairs. If you have not taken the Xbox apart the warranty is valid and Microsoft will fix it for free.

First check your AV cable. Unplug it, put it back in, turn back on. If that doesn't work, long story short, call support (18004myxbox).
Error explanation below:
E-74 - There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (error 102)
102 error - Error in the "Digital Backbone" (CPU/GPU/RAM), this is usually caused by a cold solder joint between the GPU and the mainboard.
There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.

E73: General Hardware Error: Ethernet port... this error is caused by a problem with the Ethernet
It is actually the solder under the GPU which is giving the error code.
Is it covered under warranty from Microsoft? If not we can fix this for you.We are listed on this site for repair service.

SOURCE: Red Ring of Death : 1 Red Light
Well the why part of your question can be answered here - http://www.xbox.com/en-US/search.aspx?keyword=one+red+light
They go into many of the error codes, as to how to fix it without voiding the warranty; If it's under warranty send it in to be fixed, or if you're dying to play right now try the 'towel method' shown here -
Beware- purposefully overheating your xbox 360 may damage your system further.
