It would be worth it to get the PVR, as most security cameras have proprietary connections or signals that the PVR will handle. Also a security system isn't much good without ability to record what the camera sees.
Good luck!

Boots up and runs perfect for about 5-10 minutes. Then it beeps twice and shuts down and does a reboot.

Could be a hard drive, power supply or DVR board issue. Try testing each by replacing except the DVR board which you cannot change without a new board. At which point, a new DVR is recommended.

Hi, I have a DI-524 and want to connect a dvr security system. Plugged in to port 2 and lights working ok but cant find it on the computer. At present unable to program dvr as software glitch on the CD...

Without the security software you're kind of working blind here.
The DVR may well be plugged in to the router, but it needs an IP address. Either this is set automatically by the router, or the software will set it for you, or it might come pre-set from the factory.
Unless you know this IP address, there's not much you can do to 'find' the DVR and not much you can do with it if you did find it.
Have you tried visiting the manufacturer website and downloading the software again from there?

Dvr port range

on most dvr 's the port is 80 for the web cam. you also need to set up the network settings and know the ip you are trying to hit and is it static or dynamic if dynamic it will change periodicly. for example if you set the network settings on the dvr to the rang of your local network it would be something like 192.168.1.10 so under your router you would open port 80 to ip 192.168.1.10. make sence. first thing i would do is make sure the network settings in the dvr are set to work within your network. unless you have an extra static ip you can put it right into the dvr. fi you need further help just ask.
