Sounds like a stupid question, but, if the camera is operating correctly in all other ways, have you checked to make sure that you didn't smudge the lens at some point?
If the camera is showing a black or distorted screen when set to photo, and photos that are taken with the black screen also show up black or distorted, then this would likely be a CCD imager failure, a common occurrence for your model camera. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this linkfor more info.
The Canon i850 uses cartridges of type BCI-3. according to Canon, the color cartridges are compatible to: BJC-3000 Series, BJC 6000, i450, i550, i850 Series, MultiPASS F30, F50, F60, F80, MP 700 and MP 730, S400, S450, S500, S520, S530D, S600, S630, S630 Network and S750. The black one will work in a few more models.
You have a bad CCD. The CCD is like film, it is what the light hits that actually convert an image to a picture. This is a repair as a rule that is more costly than what your camera may be worth.
The camera is fine. Since it is an Single Lens Reflex (SLR), it is not possible to use the LCD screen to compose your pictures. Canon answers that here: CanonUSA
When trying to print color documents or photos using our Canon MultiPASS 700, the photo or document will have stripes all the way through it. It has also developed a problem of having fine lines that do not print when we are printing a black and white document.
