Question about Promise Pegasus R6 12TB RAID System (H5187VCA

1 Answer

3 of 6 drives on Pegasus R6 (12TB) Array show offline

Three bottom drives on 6 array deck show offline, do not believe it is a HD or controller problem, but rather something I can do to get them back on line and not lose data.

If this is a RAID 5 and the data is of any importance I would definitely suggest consulting an expert. RAID can be tricky. Read some precautions here :Best Way to Recover Failed RAID 5 Array Quickly and Affordably Proceed with caution, I cannot tell you how many times failed attempts have come into our office making things next to impossible to actually recover the data.

Hi. We have a ML110 server with RAID 5 (4x250gb HD SATA) in a Adaptec 2610SA. The RAID has 2 Arrays (#00 Operating System and #01 Data). We have tried to replace a failed HD and since then the Windows...

Did you make sure that your hard drive has been made into a "dynamic volume" instead to the usual "simple volume"? It has to be "dynamic" before your can put it into a RAID configuration. You will have to use your RAID Controller to create a dynamic volume or to make the hard drive part of a dynamic volume.

did you change operating systems? windows doesnt recognize EXT2 formats there may be an issue there.

was the other drive part of a raid array before the retooling? if it was part of a raid array you may need to rebuild the array before accessing the files.

next insure there are no special drivers required to access the drives nothing wierd like scsi interface or PCI card controller?

if there is no wierd issues try useing the setup disk as a boot disk drop to DOS and access the drive that way.

Not getting a drive letter from Compaq SCSI RAID setup

Did you see any new drives in the disk managemen screen? To get to the disk management, hold window key down and hit 'R', then type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

If you do see the drive in the lower half of the screen, you need to initialize the drive either as dynamic disk or basic disk. Then you need to add a new partition and format it.

Good luck.

Our 1600sc dell server is beeping continuosly.

Check the PowerEdge Raid Controller for parity problems. Sounds like the status on the physical volumes participating in a RAID array has been degraded.

Loud beeping from a drive is usually an indication that an invalid drive array member has resulted in a degraded logical volume.

If you were counting correctly, you had at least three drives - most likely participating in a RAID-5 setup. The array might have been rebuilt with one bad drive. But it sounds like you've got two corrupt physical volumes in the array. And that's not good.

Hope you've got a backup!

Problem with new array.

Do you see your new disk in the "Disk Management" window? To get there go to "run", type "compmgmt.msc", then click disk management. If you do see the disks there, then you need to format the disk to a "basic" configuration. If your new disk/volume does not show up there, I would suggest a hard reset on your server whenever possible. I see this issue at times with Windows and newly added storage array logical drives.
