Have a 7 horse Tecumseh motor has spark that comes and goes cleaned magneto and the key still the same

Your positive that its spark? I'm not sure how you proved that. How bout gets up to temp the magneto may overheat and stop working, its a 50 dollar or more gamble. Check an automotive store and pick up an "INLINE" neon spark tester. 20 bucks and it works on everything. "Prove your guess" I guess :)

I believe you have a timing problem. Do you remember hitting something hard with your blade? I would say you have sheared your timing key. Order of repair : remove top cover to engine, this may involve gas tank, gas line, oil filler tube. Remove flywheel nut, remove flywheel. Timing key is the small key between flywheel and crankshaft. Timing key may just be dented but it will need to be replaced. Bring it with you, Tecumseh has a few different styles of key depending on engine and year.

Are you sure you had spark before you took it apart? If you are not sure, then the Ignition Coil may have went bad. How did it act before you decided to take it apart?

You did not post any information about the motor. There is a specific gap between the magneto and the flywheel and also the flywheel has a woodruff key to make sure the timing is correct. Check for spark, check gap on magneto and check magneto if you don't have spark.

Is it hard to change a magneto on a 5.5 hp Tecumseh engine?


How old is the gas in the tank? If it is older than 2 months drain it out and put in fresh gas and try again. Have you seen spark jump across the spark plug gap? To check for spark I use a spark checker. One end goes to the plug and the other to the spark plug lead. If you have spark you see a light flash which is more easy to see.

Tecumseh troubleshooting


Three things, the magneto is faulty, the circuit is grounded, the plug wire or boot is faulty. A quick test is to remove the small ground wire from the magneto (usually black), if you then get spark the circuit is grounded by a safety switch or a bad wire segment. If not remove the spark plug rubber boot and remake the connection, if you get spark you've fixed it and if not you need a new magneto.

Not gettng spark


first unless this is an older engine points are not used anymore pre 1980 it could be grounding out causing it not to spark to check this take the ground wire loose from the magneto and try that if you have spark then your ground wire has a nick or cut in the insulation if that does not correct the problem a new magneto is the solution but check the ground FIRST

Won't start, changed plug, set gap on magneto still no spark


To test magneto leave properly mounted and gapped to the motor. unplug black wire from magneto. Crank motor and test for spark. If you get spark with the wire unplugged then the magneto is fine and your problem is in the wiring system, likely a safety switch. If you have no spark with the wire unplugged then the magneto is bad and needs to be replaced.
BTW, the black wire is a ground. That is what shuts the motor off when you turn the key to off or when you get out of the seat, etc. So the motor will not shut off with that wire unplugged. Also, putting any voltage on that wire will immediately damage the coil.

AH520 Tecumseh engine will not start; no spark to plug. Checked for spark to plug; no spark Cleaned fuel line from tank to carb. Used fresh fuel. Snowblower has not been used for about 15 years.


I would recommend a serious carburetor cleaning or even installing a new rebuild kit after the machine setting up for so long. The spark problem must be checked for either the (magneto to flywheel air gap) or the condition of the electrical points and condensor on it (if this older model has them)

I have a 6hp tecumseh motor on a go kart that is not getting spark.it has been sitting for a whilei have cleaned the magnet behind cover but im not sure if it is the problem or something with the on/off...


First, try a new plug, then if still a problem ....

Assuming it's not pre-1985, then the ignition is solid state. To test - disconnect the 'kill' wire (usually black, but could be green or even red) coming from behind the cowling. Check for a spark. If OK, your problem is in the wiring. If still no spark, replace the coil.

If your engine IS ancient enough to have points, post back here and I'll advise.
