I'd suggest the problem is with the other machine ... which is what, exactly? Is the CD an official release? If so, it may have copy protection embedded in it, and I suspect this is what the other machine is protesting at. The Alesis doesn't care about copy protection.

SOURCE: CD RESET FAILURE

I have the same problem. I have traced it to a bad CD Player/Burner. A replacement along with a new eprom chip in order to run the new updated burner can be ordered directly from Alesis- number on their website for $70 including shipping. I was able to troubleshoot it by dropping a new Panasonic DVD/CDR burner in the unit. It powered right up but wouldn't recognize the CDR. The unit will function without the proper CDR however- just no burning. This is an easy fix if you are at all technical.

SOURCE: I cant make recordings on my masterlink every time

Look at all the tracks in the playlist that you're trying to burn to CD - is there a track that you've perhaps forgotten about still in the playlist, one of less than 5 seconds?
When you press Create CD, you're telling the Alesis to create a CD from the WHOLE of the current playlist, not just the track you recorded most recently ...

When I use ML-9600 as a palyer, can not copy from it to another CD recorder via digital IN-OUTs; the other recorder says "UNLOCK" so something must be unlocked in Masterlink but what and hoe?

What are you playing back, and what can the receiving unit cope with?

If you're playing back 24/96, your receiving unit MUST be able to cope with this. If the receiving unit can only cope with 16/44 or 16/48, you're doomed to fail.

Can copy from analog sources, but can't copy from digital source, eventhough the signal is monitored. The display says "can't copy".

Media
The unit requires Digital Audio CD-R or CD-RW media for
recording. Computer CD-R or CD-RW discs do not work with
this unit.

Serial Copy Management System
This unit is in compliance with the Serial Copy Management
System standard. This standard has been established to
restrict digital-to-digital copying to only the first generation.
The basic rules governing this system are as follows:
Rule 1
A digital recording is possible from a digital source such as a
CD, DAT or MD onto a recordable CD-R, CD-RW, MD or DAT
through a digital input connection. However, further digital
to- digital recording is prohibited for the second and later
generations.
Rule 2
When an analog source such as an analog disc or FM
broadcast is digitally recorded by using a CD-R, CD-RW, MD
or DAT, this recorded source can be digitally recorded on
another CD-R, CD-RW, MD or DAT. However, further digital
copying is prohibited.

Recording levels are low

There's no record level adjustment on the Masterlink. Increase the output level of your mixer, or add a variable level preamplifier between the mixer and the Masterlink.

Or, use the level adjustment on the Masterlink once the recording has been done, and before you write it to CD, either with level control or DSP normalisation

Why i am seeing DIN UNLOCK

If you are recording from a DIGITAL input like the OPTICAL or DIGITAL COAXIAL and their is no signal, or if it is a 'non-copyable' copy of a digital copy (from a mini-disc or protected audio CD-R) you will see this. You need to record using ANALOG inputs, then you won't have this DIN UNLOCK problem using analog. Double check your digital connections and make sure your digital source is set to 'play' and see if the DIN Unlock goes off. Otherwise, use analog reocrding only.

It wont let me record anymore

If you are connecting via toslink optical or coax digital chances are you are encountering SCMS (Serial Copy Management System). SCMS will prevent you from copying a previously copied DAT or CD. You will need a CSMS stripper or copy bit bypass to circumvent this. I am assuming you are not violating copyrights. Behringer Ultramatch 2000 is a good SCMS bypass machine, and they are easily found on the internet.

Downloading my music and then burning to a cd

Have you read the section of manual relating to 'Importing CDs' ?

Select a playlist, press 'playlist edit' - press HD/CD - insert CD, close drawer. Once Alesis has scanned disc, press 'track move' - display should read Move CDTrk -> Trknn where 'nn' is the next available track in playlist. Press Cursor Left to place cursor under CDTrk, press Down/No, and display should read Move CD->Playlist. If you now hit Yes it will copy all CD tracks to the active playlist (it'll prompt if the playlist isn#'t empty to make sure you want to add the CD to the tracks already in the playlist).

Once they are copied to the playlist, you can move them around if required, DSP them, then burn that playlist to a blank CD

I tried the "pressing play/pause and record simultaneously" during power
up, and it worked.....dunno for how long. The unit still makes strange
noises occasionally and doesn't seem completely healthy, but it's up
and I'm copying files that I want to save. We'll see.

Copy Files to a CD

You need to loacte the files on the unit and get them to your hard drive via the transfer function. Once on your machine use any cd (like Nero) creating program to back them up to a black cd. You have to make sure your computer has a cd burner.
