There is a lot of things u have to do to get to lifters. When I replaced mine in my stratus I went to Auto zone and bought a repair manual that gives u the information u will need.

What is ticking noise from passenger side of motor?

Michael, check your engines oil level right away, low or dirty oil is the main cause. Other things that can cause this issue could be worn or dirty cam lifters or tappets, exhaust leak, loose worn timing chain, possible EGR valve cracked or leaking at base, bad belt or tension er, the list could go on. Slight ticking is not a bad thing. Given the age of the engine, it is to be expected as things wear. Metal filings on the drain plug are not unusual either.

Lifter ticking

do an oil and filter change first. you should put an engine flush in before doing that. as you can get a ticking sound due to dirty oil .or very thin oil higher mileage cars need thicker oil. like 20/40.

Sounds like your problem might be bad lifter or bad rocker arm spring. Either way you'll probably have to remove the valve cover to check both. You might also go to a parts place and purchase an oil additive to see if it might help free up the lifter...if thats what it is.

How do you no if your lifters are going bad

Bad lifters will make a loud "ticking" sound. This noise can be isolated from other engine noises by putting a section of rubber hose (like a heater hose) up to your ear and using it like a stethescope. Lifter noise will be coming from the valve cover area.

Is it necessary to replace valve lifter or can you adjust lash to reduce clatter on dakota v-8

hydraulics lifters you must replace as they will wear out.

solid tappet lifters can just be adjusted for. Unless you have some custom old engine in yours I'd imagine yours is the first.

You might also try running some pennzoil or quaker state oil to reduce clatter. They're wax based and will often do wonders for semi-clogging the right areas while keeping the other places open. Great for hi mileage motors.

Ticking noise comes and goes i took it to the dealer they said the camshaft and the#6 lifter is bad do i have to replace the engine

should be able to rebuild. sounds like you will need a new cam and lifter set. Cam and lifters could be replaced without completely rebuilding engine, but I wouldn't recomend it. All the metal from the cam and lifter goin down will have already gone through your oil system therefore engine really needs complete disassemble and cleaned.

Ticking noise from engine

You might have a bad hydraulic valve lifter (assuming this engine has them)... you could try an aftermarket product designed to unstick valve lifters.... any auto parts store carries them.
