SOURCE: Air compressor w/5hp motor
Assuming that the motor is factory matched to pump, it should be powerful enough to turn the pump. Most problems with motors are related to pressure switch and/or capacitor. The pressure switch could have burned contacts causing low amps to reach the motor. The capacitor should test at least 90% of rated value printed on capacitor. Some volt meters have capacitor check setting. Also this motor at 5 hp must draw lots of amps. The outlet should be rated at least 20 amps and plug the compressor directly into oulet without an extension cord. \
Secondary problem is the in-tank check valve. The check valve should hold in tank pressure without leaking back to the head of the pump. If check valve leaks, replace it with any brand of same thread size. enjoy

A humming motor usually means a bad starting capacitor, but it could be some other things. If you see some water movement that means that your impeller is spinning and the capacitor is good, and in this case you would want to check for air leaks on the suction side of the pump. Make sure that there is water at least 3/4 of the way up in the pump and the valves are in the right position (sometimes turning the skimmer off and just sucking from the main drain can help). Also check to make sure that there is water in the skimmer, and it is not getting sucked dry. Next lubricate the pump lid gasket, and try some silicone around the threaded pipe on the front of the pump. If all this fails you could have some debris stuck in the impeller.

SOURCE: motor hums then clicks off
Has the motor seemed a little slower in starting than usual? If so then you probably have a weak or defective motor capacitor. Try switching out with a new one. They are inexpensive.Try to turn the motor shaft at rear (under end cap) while it attempts to start. If the motor kicks on then replace capacitor.
