There may be more than one fan, one or more may be to circulate the cold air through the evaporator (the coils that get cold) and the other is near the compressor or the condenser if the fan beside the compressor is running and the compressor is not, then the most commen problem would be the compressor start mechanism. Something like an RCO410 or a smaller version is the RCO810 the fastest cheapest thing to do is buy one and put it on by following the diagram written on it. If the compressor does not start after that and the condenser fan is still running, you will need a pro to change out the compressor, unless you have experience you can't do that yourself.

Thank you. After looking more, I see that there is another fan behind the condenser coils. Both fans work. The compressor is running and tests ok with the multimeter. I am not sure what else to check.

My kenmore 253 upright freezer/fridge is not cooling the fridge part correctly. It's cool but not cool enough to keep the food fresh. The freezer works well sometimes. And sometimes it seems that it's not...

Try this test. Set a window fan behind the fridge to constantly blow air across the lower coils at the floor. If the fridge works well after a while of this, then the lower fan on the fridge needs replaced. Sometimes though, after a while, the fan will finally start working again because the cycle has finally corrected itself with the test. Leave the window fan run on low for a few days before removing it. The hum you hear is the compressor moving the coolant and is supposed to do the hum sound. That's good. Now once the fridge is working, and you still have a good freezer section and not cool enough below in the fridge for you, there is a knob that sets the cool lower by opening flaps under the freezer to let more cold down to the fridge area. Set this knob to colder and the flaps will open more.

Fridge is not getting cold even though the thermostat is at 5

Most friges take cool air from the freezer with a fan to cool the rest of the unit. I am not familar with your model but there should be a fan somewere in the back of your freezer. Also make sure you have space in back and to the sides of the fridge for air flow.

Fridge question

Sounds like you mad have a bad relay or overload on the compressor. I would also check your condenser fan motor to make sure its running and blowing air on the compressor to cool it. If its not running the compressor may be overheating and shutting off on its overload. If the condenser fan motor is running I would assume that you would need a new relay and overload it will come in a kit. Usually it will make a clicking sound when the compressor is TRYING to start and then shuts off on its overload if the start components are bad.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Freezer works, fridge doesn't

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Both Freezer & Fridge compartments not cooling

clean the coil behind the fridge or under the fridge (where ever they are) and make sure both fans are running, the one in the freezer and the one underneath. If that don't work you may be low on freon change fan motor

My side by side whirlpool ref. doese not cool or freeze even though the motor continues to run.

If it is not cooling in either freezer or fridge and the compressor is running you are more than likely short of refrigerant which has leaked out. The leak needs to be repaired and the fridge recharged. If there is slight cooling you should make sure that the fans are operating and that you have airflow.

Freezer does not cool while the fridge is up and running. what is the problem?

Neither the freezer or refer sections are cooling? Can you hear if the compressor is running (black soccer ball sized unit underneath)? Could be "stuck" in the defrost cycle (happens a lot).
