You need to have the yellow wire from the stereo connected to constant battery/12 volts. That wire supplies power for the memory, if it is connected to ignition power, when you turn off the car, the power for the memory is off also.

Everytime i turn my car off and take the key out of the ignition all my stereo presets reset. all connections made are correct, however there is one wire which is left over. it is orange with white stripes...

Most stereos have two power connections. One is "constant" (aka always connected to +12V) and the other is switched on/off by the ignition. They may go be various names. The idea is that the constant +12V keeps the stereo from losing all of the settings while the switched power turns the stereo off when the key is not on "start" or "accessory". It sounds like the both connections may be made to the switched power on your car, causing it to go completely powerless when your car is off.

Are the presets reset after you turn the car off or only after you turn your car back on? If they only reset after turning the car back on, it's possible the battery and/or electrical system is having trouble keeping the system voltage up while the starter is trying to turn the engine.

The illumination signal is usually used to let the stereo know when you've turned your headlights on, so it can dim the display automatically. Should be completely separate from your issue.
