Have you checked the inline fuse?. Also you could unplug the ignition switch and clean the terminals, particuarly the one with red wire in it. That the one that has constant power to it and tends to corrode over time. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: my 1949 8N Ford tractor, the starter just spins

My thought is you need a new "bendix" for lack of a better word. The device I speak of spins out and connects with the flywheel. There is the possibility you have electric problems but based on what you say, I think it is mechanical.

I had this same problem with a twin cylinder B & S engine and was able to get just the gear drive replaced without replacing the whole starter. Hope this helps you

Starter on my 91 ford ranger 4 wheel drive starts my pickup a couple time then it just spins have changed it 3 times now

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter. If you changed the starter look at the flywheel.

Starting

Return starter bc the starter solenoid is not engaging bendix, which engages the starter teeth into the flywheel..

Engine won't turnover

It sound like the starter solenoid that forces the starter gear onto the flywheel, you need to replace the solenoid unit.

Starter spins but won't engage

The starter on your bike uses a solenoid that also manually engages the starter gear. Try lubricating the solenoid mechanism and verify that the mechanism does not bind or stick. Once you have the mechanism freed up, check the starter again. If it does not engage, replace the solenoid (or, while you're at it, just replace the entire starter assembly).

ANY FAULT CODES? HAVE YOU CHECKED THE STARTE DEPTH FOR PROPER CLEARANCE? HAVE YOU RITIATED THE FLYWHEEL TO LOOK FOR MISSING TEETH? I HAD AN 82 T/A AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED MY STARTER PROBLEMS. AS FAR AS NO SPARK DO YOU HAVE ANY FAULT CODES INTHE ELECTRONICS? TO TEST WITHOUT A SCNNER GO TO THIS LINK

Moto Guzzi breva 1100 won't start clicks at relay.

Take a look at the starter solenoid. There are two larger wires, on the back. One from the battery positive, (main hot wire), the other goes to the starter motor (If you jump these terminals the starter will spin but will not engage the flywheel). Look at the wires and nuts on the solenoid, especially the starter motor side make sure they are clean and tight, have not gotten hot and started rusting. Also check the voltage on the solenoid wire, (smallest) wire from the start button. In some cases there is a voltage loss on this wire. Next time it will not engage the starter right away, make a jump from the main power battery terminal on the starter to the solenoid wire. If it starts right up every time, you need to add and wire in another relay to carry the voltage to the solenoid from the start button, (a relay to work the solenoid, lol). If that test does not work or help.. Tap on the starter motor with a hammer. if it catches and turns the engine then, the motor brushes are worn and need to be replaced.

Every so often when I try to start my 2005 F250 the starter will just spin. In every case so far when I try the second time, it will start ok.

If the starter is spinning without engaging the flywheel, chances are that the drive (called a bendix drive) is going bad. Part of that unit is a sprague or also known as an overrunning clutch. it's purpose is to permit the engine to spin faster than the starter when it fires up, otherwise the starter would explode due to the excessive rpm's. If the sprague is worn, or the gear slide is dirty or pitted, the gear end won't work properly. Since most times when that part goes bad, other parts of the starter are usually worn enough to warrant replacement, the best option is to replace the starter as a unit. (so in two weeks, you aren't taking it apart again to replace the brushes etc.)

Check the starter. Sound like the gear on the starter is stuck or broken off and not engaging flywheel.. Just your starter is spinning
