SOURCE: chuck change

After removing the screw and inserting the allen wrench shift the drill to the LOW position and turn the clutch to the drill only position. Use an allen wrench about the size of the chuck capacity so that it will not flex when hitting it with a mallet. Sometimes they are stubborn because of the torque but this should work. Put the allen wrench at about a 30deg angle and hit the wrench. I support the chuck on a workbench or a block of wood will do fine. The chuck has standard threads.

SOURCE: chuck removal

First open the chuck jaws and remove the LH chuck retaining screw. After that find a bent handle allen wrench about the size of the chuck. Put the shorter end in the chuck and clamp down on it. Put chuck on a block of wood or workbench with the long end at about a 30 degree angle so you can hit it counterclockwise with a hammer. It might take a couple hits but it will come off.

SOURCE: makita 6408 drill motor. can't see how to replace the chuck.

If you have the 6408 as listed the spindle is threaded and you are correct there is no retaining screw. What you would need to do is find a bent handle allen wrench about the size of the chuck capacity 3/8" and insert the shorter end in the chuck and tighten. put the chuck on a block of wood or workbench and position the long end at about a 30 degree angle in the counter clockwise position and strike it with a hammer, this might take a couple hits. If this is not a 6408 let me know and I will look at the tool for you and see what you got.

Keyless chuck drill just spins

Some times the selector on top get gummed up with dust, it just needs cleaning. You were right to put it into 1st gear to remove the chuck with a big allen key, you get more resistance in the gears.

I have just purchased a Makita 8391DWPETK 18V Cordless Combi Drill - how do i actually put a drill bit in? Do I need to take off the plastic ring?

The large black part of the chuck should turn left and right to extend (close) and retract (open) the three chuck teeth that hold the bit in place. Turn the chuck to open it far enough to get your bit fully in the chuck then turn it closed to hold the bit in. When the teeth make contact turn the chuck a bit further to get it tight enough that the bit won't slip. When you get used to it, sometimes it's easier to hold the chuck lightly and turn it by lightly squeezing the trigger to turn the chuck with the drill motor.

How do i fasten the the drilling bit in the machine ?

For the pictured drill motor, you put the bit in and use a "chuck key" to tighten the chuck onto the bit...

If the photo is not your machine but you have an SDS type chuck, you insert the bit, pull back on a collar and twist the bit until you feel it engage and release the collar. When seated properly you cannot pull the bit out without pulling back on the collar.

Hi i broke the chuck on my 1/2 makita cordless

Put the biggest hex key you have in the chuck and tighten it then hit it clockwise with the spindle lock engaged a couple of times. The screw in the chuck will then undo clockwise and the chuck can be undone after by putting the allen key back in and unscrewing it anti-clockwise maybe with a light tap from a mallet.
Hope this helps

Damaged chuck

Grasp chuck, reverse it until fully open. Look inside where bit goes and should be an allen head or torque head screw holding chuck to motor arbor/shaft.

The motor is working but the chuck head is not turning properly - it turns and then when you put pressure on it it stops. I have 3 makita drills and this is happening with all of them

First, check the lever on the top of the drill (high/ low lever speed) and make sure it is engaged in one of the positions. If it is in the middle it will cause your drill to stop. Otherwise, the gear box is gone and will need to replaced. The part # you need is #125-429-0 and it runs about $59.20.
Good luck
