How the jumper setting is done for maxtor n256j50

If this is an IDE/PATA hard drive then the jumper settings are marked on the circuit board.
MA = master
SL = slave
CS = cable select
If this hard drive is the one installed on the Primary IDE controller the the jumper has to be set to Master. If it won't boot up then the jumper needs to be set to Cable select.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the 2nd connector on the IDE data cable that is connected to the primary IDE controller then the jumper must be set to Slave.

If this hard drive is a second hard drive and is connected to the secondary IDE controller and there is no other drive on the IDE data cable other than this hard disk the the jumper can be set to either Master or Slave.
If there is a CD drive on this cable too then the drives on this data cable then the jumpers on each drive must be set differently, they cannot be set the same jumper setting.

There should be jumpers on the back of both hard drives. You need to set the primary hard drive jumper to MASTER and the secondary hard drive jumper to SLAVE. Here is a picture of the jumper settings.

Check the jumpers (Little connector which connects two pins together) at the back of the drive, your second drive should have the jumper set to slave.

You should remove your new hard drive out from your computer. Check your dvd drive jumper configuration. Make sure that if you use it as secondary drive for your primary drive like hard disk or etc., the jumper configuration is set to slave.And if you use the drive as a primary master, make sure that the jumper settings is set to master. Dont join both primary drive into one data cable, it will cause a drive error or one of them will not work. After that, install back your dvd drive into your computer.

I have a 320 as my primary and i want 2 ad a 500 sata wd how do i set the pin jumper for secondary on my new one and the factory 320 has no jumper at all thanks

The SATA Drives do not need jumpers to set primary and secondary drive positions. Each sata drive gets it's own connection to the motherboard. Check you motherboard diagram, and make sure the 320GB drive is plugged into the 1st sata controler, and that the 500GB drive is connected to the 2nd.

I have bought two hitachi 160 GB hard drives and need jumper setting explained please

The usual jumper settings for a hard drive are:
  • Cable Select

  • Primary

  • Secondary
Cable select means that the mainboard will choose whether to make the drive primary or secondary. Most mainboards today support cable select. And, most drives will have their jumpers already set to cable select. You can just have all your drives set to cable select, and the mainboard will take care of the rest.

“Primary” means first and most important. Think of the primary as the one that usually takes control of the cable and gets its way. The secondary is like a little brother who must usually wait.

You usually want your main hard drive set as primary, or set it as cable select and have the mainboard set it as primary

Jumper Positions on the TOS MK4026GAX drive

Hello,
Check the primary drive. Maybe the jumper for that is set to master/SINGLE drive. You need to change it to accept a slave drive alongside it.
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Lolita
