Question about Lionel New Haven Freight Train Set

Running a conventional Lionel Engine with a Cab 2 Legacy remote:

I am presently running two seperate tracks or layouts. The one is a complete Legacy cab 2 remote system with a Legacy diesel engine, it runs great. the other layout has a conventional steam Polar Express engine with a proto sound coal tender. I am presently trying to run the conventional Polar Express train with the Legacy cab 2 remote system. Nobody, even the dealer cannot tell me exactly what I need to make the conventional system work with my Legacy remote system. so far I have invested in a Powerhouse 180 watt transformer #6-23983 and a new Powermaster Bridge #996 #6-24279 and the way it looks, I will need a #6-24130 TMCC Powermaster variable track voltage unit. I saw some instruction about using the three ended communications cable that came with my cab 2 Legacy system to be connected between the cab 2 base unit, the Poermaster Bridge unit and the TMCC powermaster. I see no connection point to connect the communications cable to the Tmcc Powermaster unit? You would think Lionel would make it a little easier to run a conventional train with a new Legacy cab 2 remote system. What else would I need & how do I connect it??

Lionel legacy will not run more than 2 trains

see pages 44 & 45 of attached pdf to figure out your power requirements for all locomotives, lamps/light bulbs & accessories.
compare total needed to power output of your transformer, if total is less that output of transformer, clean wheels, roller pickups & track.
if total is greater than output of transformer, you need more power/larger output transformer. lean wheels, roller pickups track.

The layout fits totally within a 4x8 board. No accessories and only the engine on the track. The engine stops like it is getting little or no power.

First check your track with a multimeter for track power voltage & continuity.
Second, clean your wheels & pick up roller on your locomotive.
Third, clean your track.

Check your track voltage with a multimeter. If you get a lower reading at the spot that causes the problem, add a feeder wire to that point.

Legacy w/ flyer, using a capasitor between both tracks.can you do this twice on the layout?

Yes you can, three or four times before you would need to alter the value of the capacitors to allow for the parallel effect electrically.

I have a new legacy 990 which does not seem to communicate with the engines. How can this be reparied?

easy. if the train switches are not set up correctly, they will cause problems. if the train comes on, but does not move, switch to cab-1 and set which engine you want. if it does not move, but the rpm goes up and down with the dial, CHECK THE BRAKE! if none turn on, check the voltage in the transformer, grey box, and track. if none of these help, please contact me. Hope it helps!

It sounds as though you may have two defective transformers. Lionel has reported problems with some of their smaller transformers. I would have the transformers and the engines checked by a Lionel service station or contact their customer service department for help.

I have a lionel legacy cab-2 remote i hooked up every thing to the manual but when i turn it on i dont get any track power

just unplug the transformer from the grey box (the one with the green light and red light) and check the voltage. if it doesn't read anything, try unplugging the transformer from the outlet and plugging it back in again. if you get a reading, replug the transformer to the grey box and check the voltage of the silver screws (where you put the + and - wires from the track to) and try using the train again

There is no on/off switch. Remote will give no indication of working. Try putting engine and coal car only and try. I have had this train set for two years and the remote tends to work whenever it wants.
