Looking for a starter solenoid wiring diagram

I have a 1988 Johnson outboard motor 20HP (used) and need to replace the starter solenoid, which was missing. I have a solenoid to install, but do not have a wiring diagram.

Motor Model Number: R20CRCCA

Appreciate any help

A marine solenoid is wired different internally than a car solenoid so be careful. In a outboard solenoid, current goes thru the two small terminals and then thru the safety switch before going to ground. A car solenoid puts full battery power out of the second small terminal and is grounded thru its frame. Both look the same but are different.

Save yourself some money and go get a lawn mower solenoid and find a way to mount it yourself. I have done a johnson outboard and a tigershark jet ski this way with no problems.

you should have a 3 post solenoid, one post will be a hot from the battery, the other post will hook to your ignition switch, the third will run to the starter itself. one post has 12 volts running to it all the time, the second gets 12 volts sent to it only when you turn key to start position, that closes a plundger inside the solenoid which closes the circuit and send the 12 volts from the battery to the starter, then when you release the key the plunger comes back up and opens the circuit. If you tak a good look at it i know you can figure it out without a diagram. Good Luck.
