Good choice, get win xp pro, whenever possible

do state system configuration

use a prog like:PCwizard2008 to examine your whole system,
save the whole hardware configuration as pdf-document(up to 99 pages)
on a separate disk/stick/floppy /cd for further assistance
back-up personal data, music, videos, docs, savegames!!!!!!!!!!

and give it the axe! want to know how, please come again or give icq-number or such,
find me in expert chat for futher assistance or come again via fixya.

you can use the vista driver packages offered at gateway's hp,
they fit for xp as well, they're packages including the xp drivers,

    setup will autoconfig your system.
tested on a win xp home machine with the vista audio player for your comfort alone
so you run no risk. good luck!

I am sorry, Iwas mistake, at HP's homepage the latest drivers for the 6200 series include Win2000,
you can download and use them as well for WInXP as this is nothing more than win2000 service pack5!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

I want to have xp on my vista gateway laptop

Hello, Its really hard to downgrade from vista to XP on dell laptops. vista and XP use completely different drivers and dell has stopped writing drivers for XP. But still you can downgrade. You need to setup external SATA harddrive from where your XP CD should boot as it wont boot from your current harddrive that has vista. Even if you set these up and downgrade, Since dell has stopped writing drivers your new XP will not work with many new softwares and applications as you wont have drivers for them. I would advice you to use Vista. Good luck, Please rate the solution. ~regards, Jegan

Unable to get my new graphics card to work

Just moments ago, I downloaded the latest (v9.4) Vista 64-bit driver for my LX 6200 for my HD 4650 512MB video card. It seems to have fixed a cursor flickering problem, but didn't help with the screen saver problem. My card is made by Sapphire and I downloaded the driver from there site at: http://www1.sapphiretech.com/us/support/drivers.php

Disabling the built in HD3200 is key to successfully installing the Catalyst software.

XP Drivers for Sony Vaio VGN-fw230j/b

It's probably not supported Sony.

You can try and downgrade but you might lose some functionality. I downgraded my Vista Gateway laptop to XP but had to spend a lot of time tracking down drivers that would work correctly.

You won't be able to just pop in an XP cd and install. You'll have to jump through a few hoops.

Here's the biggest hoop and guide here:

http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html

Since you have a newer laptop your hard drive uses sata drivers which the XP cd doesn't have built-in.

Let me know if you get stuck or have anymore questions.

Xp home installation

You need to have installed drivers for xp for that hard drive. Without them it won't load.
You can go to the Gateway site and enter your serial number to see the original configuration of your system, get the names of the hardware installed on it, and look for drivers for xp for all of that hardware.
Please see this article and follow the links at the end to make sure you have all the drivers needed for an xp installation. Downgrade vista to xp
Also an excellent tutorial for updating drivers here and a source of drivers here
