Sounds like the derailleur cable is stretched out and needs to be adjust. search here or google on how to adjust a derailleur, or take to your local bike shop, it's a cheap repair.

SOURCE: there are gear shifts on

I strongly suggest taking the bike and your son into a bike shop. They will be happy to show him not only how to shift the gears, but why and when. Also they may even throw in some maintenance tips.

The easiest settings will be labeled 1 and the hardest the larger number. if you were too look at the bike where the chain is, the gears that are closest to the frame are the easiest and the ones far away are the hardest. In the back this means the largest gears are the easiest in the front they are opposite, smallest gears are the easiest.

There are a number of good books and many free instructional videos on youtube that show shifting principles. The biggest issue for 10 year olds is whether they can reach the levers comfortably.

hi.

these can be adjusted, but the first thing to do is to change the entire gear cable.
spraying the whole thing with wd40 or simillar may help, but the lining of the outer cable has almost certainly worn and is causing the problem you are having.

this is very common. bike makers tend to use relatively cheap cables, and they can wear and cause problems quite easily.
oil the new cable before you fit it and you should not have any more problems.

hope this helps

What causes ice maker to make constant clicking noise. This happens in the on and off positions.

The constant clicking noise is probably the neoprene gears within the timer motor itself. Well, sometimes there is a brass 'drive' gear that meshes with a neoprene gear which then in turn operates the mechanical components of the ice maker.

I was just given a diamondback SHERWOOD bike. I don't know how to use the gears -- what's the right shifting pattern for hills

Google "bicycle shifting technique", for example:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

You should NEVER run cross-chained (big-big or small-small). The drive train performs best when the chain line is as close to straight as possible.

Excess sideways stress on the chain will wear it out prematurely and decrease its normal efficiency.

To demonstrate this for yourself, put the bike in the same combination of gears you

Many possibilities, including derailleur outer limit not correctly adjusted, derailleur not mounted correctly, tight bend or friction in cable. Talk to the store manager/owner about correcting your complaints or find another shop or a bike co-op. If the bike is a major brand from a bike shop (Trek, Giant, Cannondale, etc.) try going to their website, look for Customer Service/Support and enter a complaint.
