Cannot download pics off camera. Computer not recognizing camera Cannot find software to re-install

If your computer does not recognize the camera when you plug it in to the computer and you do not have access to the software needed, you will need to find another way to get the pictures onto the computer straight from the memory card. If your computer has a memory card reader, use that because that's the easiest way to access pictures on a memory card. If your computer does not have a memory card reader, you can buy a USB adapter that your memory card can fit into and your computer can read through USB. They are cheap and useful. Here's a good one for 12.40 from amazon.com that reads many types of memory cards including:

MMCmobile, SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus, RS-MMC; MiniSD,miniSDHC; microSD, microSDHC; MMCmicro; CF Type I and II, Microdrive; MemoryStick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo; MemoryStick Micro (M2)

New Coolpix L20. Driver does not install with Windows Vista. Have un-installed all USB, re-booted, etc, but nothing helps. Have inserted Nikon CD and tried installing driver from there, but still...

Greetings,

I would take out the SD memory card and use it with a card reader like this one: http://bit.ly/5fruhB . You simply take out the SD memory card and put it in the card reader. Then put the usb end of the card reader into your computer and download the pictures that way.I also recommend that you download Picasa, a free photo organizer/editor for your pictures: http://bit.ly/5f6HEt This way you bypass the lousy nikon software altogether. Hope that was helpful,
Take Care,

USB port is good but won't read my coolpix L18

Sometimes you need software to synchronize your camera with your pc. It usually comes along in the cd with the camera. Dont worry, if you dont have one, just take out the memory card from the camera and put it in the card reader of your pc. Now you can transfer your files.

Coolpix L18 camera won't be recognized

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

I'm trying to write to my SD card in my L18 but can't

Are you using a USB connection to the camera? That only lets you read the card, not write it. If you want to write to the card you'll need to use a card reader. A real card reader, not a camera masquerading as one.
