A horizontal line on your LCD display is either caused by the video chip on your system board or the LCD screen itself. Either way it will not cause you to lose data on your hard drive. It is a video problem.
By connecting an external monitor from a desktop PC to the back or side of your notebook and switching to it by using your function keys (see manual), you can see if the problem is also on the monitor (meaning video chip problem) or stays only on the notebook LCD (LCD problem).
The video chip problem means you will need a system board. The LCD problem means you will need a new LCD panel. In rare cases, reseating of the ribbon cable on the back of the LCD panel will fix the red line.

Horizontal black line on monitor.....
You won't loose any information, but your monitor is telling you that is has problems and eventually fail and need a replacement.
If you don't carry the laptop to different places, you can get away with a regular monitor, by connecting it to the VGA video adapter on your laptop....
Hope this helps

You won't lose your information. That's on the hard drive.

The computer will work fine the mean time. That line is just a small component dying on the lcd board in the lcd itself.

You can fix it by swapping the lcd with another one.

That's it.

If you're worried about losing your important files.

BACK THEM UP!

Pinky red tinge horizontal lines near the taskbar in display HP Pavilion dv4

sounds like your power inverter is going bad. replace power inverter and see how that works. Other issue if not solved is probably lcd screen. Inverter's can be found cheaper used if you use the serial number on your old inverter for searching, seeing as how inverters are often used on many different of machines. FYI.

Try to unplug all the PCI cards and boot, if its still doing it check the ram. If its still doing it check to see if the power supply is good. If all that fails, It could be eather a bad mother board or bad processor.

You are not alone with this problem. Some lines (like mine) run vertically rather than horizontally. The solution - sue HP. These screens have a known fault ie the Nvidia graphics chip is known to be the culprit. The company knows all about this issue but expect us to pay to put it right - sue them, you can do it online for around £35 (UK).

HP Pavilion ZD8000 vertical lines issue

Hi,
In answer to your question. It may be a screen problem. as the screen has a Matrix of vertical and horizontal line configuration.
I,d suggest trying the laptop/computer on an external monitor or screen. if it works fine on an external. then it could be assumed that the TFT Panel or invertor has a fault.
if the picture/display still has vertical lines on an external monitor, then the fault may lie, with the Mainboard.

Process of elimination, before spending any Money :)
