SOURCE: I have a model 33 John Deere manure spreader that has the beater gear box with worn gears that won't engage. I cannot get replacement gears due to age of unit. Is there a way to repair the gears by we
There is no way to repair a worn gear, this is due to the heat treating of the metal to toughen it against wear and tear of use, otherwise it wouldn't last but a few hours of operation, this precise heat treating of the steel can only be done with special equipment and requires special skills to pull off correctly, so no you will need to get new gears. I know from personnel experience that you can get parts for these old farm implements, call around and see what you can find out. I will say that worn gears are not the common reason for hard gear engagement, that would be worn shift dogs and synchro ring cones or worn gear shaft bearings.
