Cannot format my optiplex 760 partition

Hi.

Because you are unable to format or delete the partition then I'm afraid that this is a strong indication that you need to replace the hard drive, this is probably due to bad sectors and clusters that the drive cannot read or write to.

Regards.

CD or DVD does not stay in slot. Computer ejects it without reading.

The Dell™ XPS One™ A2010 system features an enhanced one-time boot menu that is easily accessible by pressing at the Dell™ logo during POST. The options in the boot menu are:
  • SATA:3M-WDC WD2500AAJS-75RYA0
  • CD.DVD:3S-TEAC DVD+/-RW DVW28
  • Network:IBA GE Slot 00C8 v1250
  • Dell Diagnostic Partition
Try to boot from a boot-able CD such as the Dell Resource CD. If it still ejects the CD then your CD/DVD drive needs to be replaced.

Wd drive PATA wdc-wd2000 jb - 00fua0 should be a 200 gb drive. said was running out of space and when checked found drive was only reporting it's size as 31.49gb. have tried everything I can think of to...

Check the hard drive for partitions, it could have several partitions, but only the first partition has been formatted.
Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - click on Disk Management and look at the Western Digital it could be Disk 1.
If you see unallocated partition, you can create and format this partition.
OR
You can delete the existing partition and create a single large partition and then format this partition.
NOTE - this process will delete the existing data on the hard drive.

Ok, I think I know your problem is in initializing of your disk and because the size of your disk.

Reason:

Did not chose NTFS in file system when doing partition.

Once you have made the partition you can then "format" the drive to NTFS. I don't recommend using either the FAT or FAT32 file system unless you plan on using windows onboard back up system. For backing up your PC, third party software is best.

Solution:

How to properly format a Western Digital Hard Drive for WIN 7:

1. click link below:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3865&p_created=1258601352&p_sid=r3tSU_bk&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_srch=1&p_lva=1364&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NjUsNjUmcF9wcm9kcz0yMjcmcF9jYXRzPTAmcF9wdj0xLjIyNyZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWZvcm1hdCB0byBmYXQzMg!!&p_li=&p_topview=1

2. Read everything at least twice! Make sure you understand it.
On line "6" read closely that explains how to partition a large drive.

Now all is left to follow the instructions, don't worry you will be fine.

Booting

When it come to deleting partitions or adding partitions I suggest you download WD's Data Lifeguard Tools. WD's User manual;
http://www.wdc.com/en/library/other/2779-001005.pdf
The object is to setup you're partitions in DOS mode by creating either a bootable CD or a bootable floppy disk. Using windows is not always the best way.
Same for you're Samsung drive, ES-Tool;
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/ES_Tool.html
Once completed installing you're operating system should be simple. Be sure to check the boot order in you're bios before loading you're OS.

Good luck!

I have a samsung sp1203N 120gig capacity, running with a new WDC WD5000AAKS-00A7B2 500GB HD ,as the primary drive on windows 7. My problem is that my samsung drive is only reading at a 31.4 GB capacity...

On XP, it was Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management.

Upgrade the 120gb to a Dynamic disk and then extend the partition, or if there's no data on it yet, delete the 32gb and create a 120gb one.

Should not be that different under Win7. Hasn't changed much since NT4.0
