Question about HP Compaq Presario SR2150NX PC Desktop

I can not defrag anymoore help me please it says mmc can not open c:windowssystem32dfrg.msc thi may be because the file does not exist,is not mmc cosole,are not creatrd by a later version of mmc,this may also be because you do not have sufficent access right to the file

MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc.


It seems that the disk fragmentor component for mmc in your saved item is corrupt. I assume you are running Windows XP.
I suggest to perform the following: Click on START and then RUN, type in MMC and then click OK.

The MMC Console will now start up.

From within the MMC console ... click on FILE and then ADD/REMOVE CONSOLE

In the STANDALONE tab towards the bootkm of the screen ... select ADD
Disk Defragmentor should now appear
Select Disk Defragmentor and then select ADD After the above is complete. Select CLOSE Then select OK

Disk Defragmentor mmc console is now opened.
I suggest to save this to your desktop or anywhere else by selecting FILE and then SAVE/AS
Give it a file name and then click OK

Your disk defragmentot should now be up and running.

My computer has lost the file to defrag, can you fix this? E-Machine, 2004, Windows XP, ITUV.92, 280GHZ, 80GB,512MB,W4885


Are you sure you lost the file or simply the shortcut icon?

To be sure, click Start>Run. When the window opens, type dfrg.msc in the Open box and then click OK.

What does that do? If that starts your defrag program we simply need to create a new shortcut for you.

Cannot Open DSA.MSC file error


When you install the Administration Tools Pack on a computer that is running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in file (Dsa.msc) is installed in the %windir%\Syswow64 folder. Additionally, the computer's file system maps the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in to the following path: DriveLetter:\%windir%\Syswow64\Dsa.mscHowever, the Active Directory Domains and Trust MMC snap-in incorrectly specifies the path of the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in as follows: DriveLetter:\%windir%\System32\Dsa.mscWhen the computer's file system tries to locate the Dsa.msc file from within the Active Directory Domains and Trust MMC snap-in, Mmc.exe is run. Mmc.exe is run because the Dsa.msc file is associated with Mmc.exe. When Mmc.exe is run, it uses the following path to locate Dsa.msc: DriveLetter:\%windir%\System32\Dsa.msc DomainPathAfter the Mmc.exe command is run, the Active Directory Domains and Trust MMC snap-in tries to locate the Dsa.msc file. Because the Dsa.msc file does not exist in the %windir%\System32 folder, the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section is generated.

To resolve this problem, manually copy the Dsa.msc file from the %windir%\Syswow64 folder to the %windir%\System32 folder.

Disk defragmenter not done


You are trying to defrag the defrag program. Try this instead. Unfortunately, two downloads are required. The first is contig.exe:

it is a 100 KB file. The second file is power defragmentor GUI and is 409 KB: Download it at:

Create a Pwr Defrag folder and extract the zipped file there. Save the contig.exe into the same folder. Make a shortcut to the Power Defragmentor application and put the shortcut on your desktop or where ever you choose. Run the GUI and select the drive to defrag. There will be an option screen next. I use the last selection, Power Mode.

This is the BEST defrag program I've found.

Cannot defrag my hard drive..


Go to Control Panel, Select System and select the Advance Tab. Now Select Settings Under Performance and again select the advance tab. Under Virtual Memory select Change. Make sure that the Paging File Size for selected Drive for the Drive partition you want to Defrag has either a custom at least 2 times the amount of installed RAM if the space is available or is set to System Managed Size.

Cannot Open DSA.MSC file error


In my case, the file was already there, and had been working for a long time prior. Making a copy of the file, and calling it something else (dsa2.msc), then pointing my shortcut to that, corrected the issue. Why? I have no idea. This same thing has just happened on a second device also -- surprised there are not more posts about this situation out there.

Defragment does not work


You need to re-register the defragmenters snap-in files, and the basic registry entries.
  • First open up a Command Prompt, this can be found at:
    Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

  • Change into your windows\system32 directory. Your windows directory will be either windows or winnt. Type:
    cd \windows\system32

  • Register the defrag components, by typing:
    regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
    regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

  • At this stage, you may find the defragmenter works. If not, there is one more step you can do.

    Using Windows Explorer browse to your windows\inf folder.
    In there you will find a file called dfrg.inf right click this file, and select Install.

Defragment does not work


Hi,

This problem can be tacked in a few ways. But I cannot guarantee that it can solve the problem. So please do try out all the alternatives shown below one at a time.

  • Go to Start and then Run, type regsvr32 msxml3.dll and run it, or
  • Start --> Run, regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll and start - Run, regsvr32 dfrgui.dll and then click on OK, or
  • Go to Start - Run and then type sfc /scannow. (If it asks for the installation CD, insert it) or
  • Install the latest MMC 3.0 (Available at Microsoft site) or
  • Browse to C:\Windows\Inf (Assuming C drive is your OS drive), right click dfrg.inf file and click on Install.
If the above does not solve your problem still, then try renaming the dfrg.msc file to something else and place the shortcut in your start menu.

If everything fails, it can only be a registry or a .MSC association problem...
