You need to bring cylinder #1 to top dead center on compression stroke. then line up the timing marks were the chain goes u will see the marks. after u line up marks put chain on, be sure that u have marks lined up right being off even one tooth and car will be out of time.

We removed the cam and did not pay attention to timing marks. the engine was rotated without cam in it. How do we set the timing?

Take the cam out and put the piston at TDC
Look at the cam with the cam gear facing you.
Turn the cam until both lobes are down(on the bottom of the cam)
Look at the cam gear, there should be 2 marks across from each other at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock
Those marks need to be parellel to the head when you set the cam in the head, carefully place the timing chain around the cam gear, trying not to move the cam.
Once you have the chain on, push the cam down in its slots in the head and look ate the timing marks on the cam gear.
They should be parellel with the head, and straight across from each other.
Recheck that the piston hasn't moved and your still on TDC.
If all is good put the rockers/valve cover on and timing chain tensioner in. Tighten the cover to specs then adjust your valve clearances to specs and your done with the timing.

Blown head gasket

please read all before starting not to bad to change did you check compression if your sure that's what it is its about 4hr job.start by putting #1 tdc intake side.note where vacuum hoses are can mark with gray or yellow perm marker remove breather all plug wires exhaust manifold then intake manifold remember what bolts in and whats nutted on.remove break booster cross vacuum hose and egr control valve on left rear of intake side remove vale cover ((you'll have to get something to hold tension on timing chain so not to let tentioner come out inside timing chain cover when removing came gear)) remove head bolts only in off order so not to put tension in one area. do not remove cam shaft bolts and do not turn cam shaft at all after timing gear is removed take off head and check piston walls for wear replace gasket and put back in GOOD LUCK

How to change a timing chain on a fuel injected v8

Same as any other v-8 dis-assemble the front of the engine to get to the timing cover. Loosen the oil pan bolts to allow the timing cover to be slipped out. unbolt and remove the timing cover. Turn the engine over by hand until the dot on the crankshaft gear( the small one) is at the top 12 oclock position, and the dot on the cam gear(large gear) is at the bottom 6 oclock position remove the old cam gear and old chain. Install new gear and chain with the marks in the same places. Re assemble engine. DO NOT be tempted to just put in a new chain, replace the chain and cam gear as a set, wear on the cam gear will cause the chain to be slack, which in turn causes the cam timing to be late.

Lotsof knocking no power

If the cam chain jumped then the tensioner is not tight. Timing is way off and valve hit piston. Need to **** case and replace tensioner, dry time then install new piston and pull vales to see if they are bent.

My 4.7 2002 dodge 1500 will not start

i purchased a new timing chain set and the cam pickup was bad on the new cam gear and we had a no start problem. i took the valve covers back off put the old gear on the cam and it started. BUT be careful if u do that you have to wedge the timing chains apart before you remove that gear so the hyd adjusters do not over expand. 4.7 dodge engines **** BIg they made them trying to save gas but the parts and repair over-ride any gas saving i got.

How to set a timing chain on a 1992 dodge dakota 318

Usually there is a dot on the crank gear and one on the cam gear. Crank is up and cam is down but you still need to make sure you have TDC=top dead center
