Question about McCall's How to Crochet It Water Sport

Open Question

I am making (crocheting) a Buffy Bear. I have come to the part to make his head but the directions are confusing.

The first row is the top of the front body and has 18 sc but my directions say I should end up with 20 sc. How can I do that, if I only start with 18 sc? Then row 3 says to 2 sc in first and last sc and I should then have 18 sc but I end up with 22 sc. The pattern comes a books called "Crochet Animals Big & Small. Row 3 does not tell me to decrease the stitch, it tells me to increase the stitch according to the books directions. Can you help? thank you Jackie Sifuentes JSifueAvon@cs.com

SOURCE: Want to change a hand crochet pattern for an afghan and make it alternating rows of two different hand crochet stitches;

After the Shell row... chain 2,skip 1, then begin your double crochet.

May I suggest that you find a crochet forum or video on youtube? Lots of things to learn on Youtube. ;)

Meaning of these crochet instructions.ch 2, in first sc (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1, dc), * Will. I make my ch 2 where the parentheses begin or in the single crochet in my last row of a shell

Chain 2 then in the next SC (of the row below), make the combination stitch. So, if the previous row has a bunch of SC, you would make the stitches leading up to the Chain 2. Then Chain 2 and in the next SC, make the 1SC, 1 HDC, ! DC.

How do i make a banded treble stitch please

  1. Yarn over hook three times, then insert hook into next stitch.
  2. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch (there are five loops on the hook).
  3. Loop yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now four loops remaining on the hook).
  4. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now three loops remaining on the hook).
  5. Yarn over hook and draw through two loops (there are now two loops remaining on the hook).
  6. Again, loop yarn over hook and draw through the last two loops on the hook (there is now one loop remaining.)
  7. This completes one double treble crochet.

How do I double crochet 7 together?

1) Make a loop over your hook as you would to start a double crochet.
2) Next insert your hook into the next stitch and pull the yarn up as you would do for a regular double crochet.
3) Do not complete that stitch.
4) Insert your hook into the next stitch and pull the yarn up.
5) You now have three loops of yarn on your hook, the two pulled up through stitches and the loop that started it all.
6) Pull your yarn through the first 2 loops.
7) Finish by pulling yarn through the remaining 2 loops.

I would not recommend double crocheting 7 together. It will be too severe a decrease and will leave a large buckling crimp in the surface. I am not sure what you are trying to do, but I would recommend decreasing from both sides or over the course of a few rows.

Good luck.
