Sounds like you spun the hub in the prop try another prop and see if that fixes the problem

90 hp 2001 Mercury outboard runs with no power

Hey Robert,
This is not enough info for a decent diagnosis.. but here goes....Will the engine rev up cleanly and fast in neutral? Yes.. proceed - . No.. take it to a professional mechanic...
1. Does the no power mean it will not accelerate in the water? when in gear will the engine rev up and then still not go? ..YES-maybe a spun hub in prop.
2. Will the engine try to take off but not pull the boat and not rev when trying to take off? Take it to a professional mechanic for a compression check.
3. The spun hub is about the only thing you can fix if its not a serious engine issue!!

Boat has issues on plane. Vibration and limit on speed. Prop is fine. Could this be an issue with gimbals?

Yes, it very well could be. If your propeller is good and it's hub bushing is not spun and your not picking up an air pocket then it's the gimbel or engine carrier bearing, which will melt and smoke. The gimbel bearing which is like a CV joint in a front wheel drive car. It will click on turns then go out all together. If it's not too late and you haven't tried it yet, pump some grease into it. Sometimes that helps if you catch it in time. The only other thing that will cause vibration and loss of speed is the gears in your unit. The only thing to do there is to check or drain the lower gear oil. You are probably right, it's the gimbel bearing.

Motor over revving

Firts thing I would look at is the hub in the propeller. It may be spun. Check that by removing it and looking at the back side for for burnt rubber or smell of burnt rubber. You can also (with the engine off and spark plug wires removed\ignition disabled) put the engine in forward gear and try and turn the prop counter clockwise. If the prop turns I would suspect the hub will need replaced. any prop rebuilding company can do this for around 50.00 or less. If the prop doesnt turn, You may need to loook into the lower unit internally and inspect the clutch\gears, etc.. Those can be suspect and usually due to shift cable issues, water intrusion, lack of oil changes etc.. Hope this helps.. Let me know if you need more assistance.

My 8hp Mariner outboard has lost power. the engine runs fine but the prop is slipping. With the engine off and the gearshift in forward the prop can be spun by hand and makes a clicking noise. I did not...

The props have a rubber bushing in the hub that can start to slip after time.Take the prop off and take it to a prop shop, not a dealer, and they can check it for you.The bush is there to stop damage to the g/box and driveline if something is hit.All props can be spun if the engine is off and the motor is in gear. It's another driveline saver. But the prop can only be spun backwards and thats when it clicks.Hope this helps

I have a 1987 mercury 9.9 outboard drive problems

the inside of the prop has a rubber between the prop itself and the inside splines to act as a shock absorber, say if you were to hit a rock. that rubber had spun out and the splines are turning inside the prop. the prop is screwed. seen it 100 times before.
