I need help putting the bobbin threader back onto a Nelco JA38 sewing machine and the springs are giving me fits. Any help?

Not sure if you are having problems with the bobbin winder or threading the bobbin. This may help:

Nelco JA 38 Sewing Machine Threading Diagram

To avoid awful thread nests under the fabric, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread.

Interestingly, the bobbin threading instructions (above) show the bobbin loading into the bobbin case so it turns COUNTER-clockwise. This is the opposite of instructions for most machines. You can probably try both, the clockwise or Counter-clockwise,and see if one works better than the other.

Be sure to use fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil on your machine. Open it up, while gently wiggling the handwheel, drop a couple drops of oil every place that metal rubs against metal. Avoid plastic or rubber parts! You may even find little round holes throughout that are oil ports. Be sure to get the area around the needlebar, presser foot lifter, feed dogs, the bobbin area, and all the dial and selector mechanisms.

You can find manuals for your machine online (not free!).

Releasing clutch that is stuck on Nelco sewing machine. Love this machine have had it for 47 years

Has the machine been regularly cleaned and oiled? Most times, older mechanical machines seize due to old oil turning to glue/varnish and preventing the parts from moving.

Perhaps a bit of Tri-Flow and heat will loosen it. If you are trying to wind bobbins, you can also purchase a stand-alone bobbin winder (one brand is called Sidewinder) for ~$30. It is helpful for many sewists because bobbins can be wound without unthreading the machine and it saves wear and tear on the machine. (Love my Nelco J-28!)

I need the manual for a Nelco F600. Do you have it or know where I can get one. I was given a machine but think it has been in storage for a long time! Need to oil and check it out.

A manual for a similar model would be a benefit. Most machines operate and thread the same. Yes, you should definitely clean and lube your machine before trying any sewing. Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube from the hardware store is a good product to use because it does not dry out and turn to glue over time.

Nelco Sewing Machine

FWIW, I inherited a Nelco J28 and it is the toughest machine in my arsenal. I repair horse equipment with it. The stitch quality is not the best, but it certainly sews most anything thrown at it. The only issue I have with it (and it is my issue, not the machine's) is that it has a side-loading bobbin which means the home position of the needle is also on the left instead of the middle. Having always used a centered needle makes using it seem somewhat unnatural. However, your machine appears to have the front-loading bobbin and centered needle.

Hello I have a nelco sewing machine but I have no clue how to sew with it I am a mixed media artist and now I want to incorporate sewing in my art please help me thank you

Before we can help, we need to know the model.

Nelco JA 38 Sewing Machine Threading Diagram

FWIW, I have an old Nelco J-28 that was passed on to me by someone who started quilting with it and advanced on to a career making wonderful creatively designed scenic quilts. It is a basic machine with straight stitch and a few zig-zag stitches. It's a tough metal mechanical machine and has been used to repair horse equipment (fly masks, etc.) and upholstery. The only thing that is perplexing to me is that it is a left needle position machine, ie the bobbin loads on the left side, the needle faces the left side, and the needle home position is on the left side and swings from the left to the right. All my other machines are center needle position so it takes some adjustment whenever switching to the Nelco--but that is a personal thing and in no way reflects on the machine and its usability. The good thing--since it is a mechanical machine, it can be maintained with frequent oiling using fresh good quality sewing machine oil and regular cleaning.

The best advice ever provided--Always Raise the presser foot when threading the upper thread and make sure the machine is threaded correctly.

My mother"ssewing machine willnot pick

I saw Nelco on this website http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Manuals/Nelco_Sewing_Machines.htm

purchasing /obtaining a manual is always very helpful when working with a sewing machine.

However, simple stuff to check, is the needle in the right way, with the scarf (groove) to the back?

Is the needle new and the right type of needle for this machine? Sorry, I don't know a lot about Nelco however, most machines use 130/705H system needles, but there is always the exception, especially with something 40+ years old so it pays to check it out.

And lastly timing, the needle needs to be down at the lowest point as the rotary hook comes around to catch the thread. If this isn't happening, then it could be that the timing is out on the machine. It's never happened to me but it can happen. But I'd suggest you try changing needle, check threading path and bobbin firstly.

Good luck.
