A steady or Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

SOURCE: I have a flickering amber light on the power button; replaced power supply and motherboard with no luck

FIRST IF YOU REPLACED THE POWER SUPPLY OF YOUR DELL PC,
MAKE SURE IS A RECOMMEND POWER SUPPLY FOR DELL COMPUTERS ONLY
BECAUSE DELL USE A DIFFERENT (NONSTARD) PS

AN PLEASE DON'T TURN YOUR PC ON, TILE YOU ARE SURE I'TS A DELL COMPATIBLE POWER SUPPLY
YOU CAN FRY YOUR COMPUTER

ON THE MOTHERBOARD I'T MAY BE THE BIOS (BIOS STANDS FOR INPUT /OUTPUT SYSTEM) I'T A CHIP ON YOUR MOTHERBOARD THAT CONTROLS THE SYSTEM HARDWARE AND ACTS AS AN INTERFACE BETWEEN THE OPERATING SYSTEM AND THE HARDWARE
I'T MAY BE FLASH
IF IS FLASH ,
YOU PROBABLY NEED TO REPLACE THE MOTHERBOARD
OR CALL DELL TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIX IT

Dimension 3100 turns on the power button has a steady orange light there is also an orange light on motherboard cpu and power suplly fans working but wont bot up

Blinking amber (orange) indicates a problem with the power supply inside the computer. If the system cannot boot and there is a solid amber light, this could indicate a problem with the power connections for the CPU on the system board (see "Power Problems" in your Owner's Manual).

We have around 30 units of DELL Optiplex GX280 having mother board failure. It was more then 3 years old already. Once the turbo fan become noisy then it will gone dead.

May be serious. See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans sound like 747 taking off. Power light goes and stays amber. This is USUALLY caused by bad capacitors on the mother board. Known GX280 problem going back. If you look on the motherboard, the capacitors should have flat tops and not leaking. If the are rounded or leaking, the MB has probably gone bad.

I obviously can not be 100% sure about this as the unit is not here.

You can google "gx280 solid amber light loud fan" and see the issues. Here is one such link.

1a Research your blinking amber lights and the ABCD's. If the specifics don't explain a LACK of power (because even a shorted USB device can sap your juice resulting in a no video condition for example) try these:

Steps to get any PC running again:
1. Remove all addon cards and HD's CD's, so all you have is video, keyboard, and mouse.
Try it - if you see any video, add one thing back at a time starting with your boot and other drives. When it dies again, there's your problem...
2. Reseat the RAM and CPU
Try it, if it works you fixed it until oxygen does its thing again in a year or two...
3. Test power supply voltages with a meter, just test a hard drive connector, red and yellow are positive and the 2 blacks are grounds you should have both 12 volts and 5 volts, (plus a couple lower voltages for the CPU and RAM on the MB, disregard for now) if 5 and 12 are there, test that they have good amperage (over 1 amp will *usually* mean you have full power)
If it still doesn't work, it's either a power supply problem with the lower voltages, or a motherboard problem, retry steps 1 and 2 a couple times, then...
4. beg borrow or (eeek! buy) a power supply...

80 or 90 percent of the time, you won't get to step 3, let alone 4, all that's left is the motherboard, etc. good luck

Dell Inspiron Vostro 530s won't boot.

Hi,

I work for Dell, If the power button led light is flashing amber or amber (the Power supply is faulty) The Yellow light you saw inside the motherboard is the "Flea Light" (that is one way you could check if there is still power on the motherboard). Since the motherboard was replaced there are a few more things to check:

1. Video card (integrated or expansion)
2. Monitor (Make sure it displays self test feature when the cables are removed)
3. Monitor Cables (VGA / DVi)
4. Power Cable on the Monitor (try a different cable)
5. Power Supply (you already checked, but i suspect this is causing the problem)

Hope this helps.
