Open Question

B d gl540 trimmer how do I replace the motor brushes on my strimmer. The strimmer overheated when a lady used it at least clouds of smoke or steam wher coming from it by the time I was able to rescue it. Really I'm asking do you think it likely the moyor needs replacing or will new brushes suffice.I tried the strimmer yesterday and it operated normally for a while, maybe three or four minutes, but then slowed so much that it wasn't cutting. What are the likely causes? Brian Richards

SOURCE: Need motor brush

Try a power tool repair shop
Try an electric motor repair shop

Try to find brushes that have the same length spring, same size spring. If they are a little big, they can be made smaller by dragging them on a flat file 'till they fit nicely.
Good luck!

SOURCE: Replacing Drive Shaft for a Ryobi 725r

The lower flex shaft should cost around $40, unless you order it online and have to pay shipping. You should be able to get one from your local MTD dealer. (Ryobi is owned by MTD)

SOURCE: mcculloch strimmer/brush cutter - cuts out when throttle opened

Hi sounds like it could need a diaphram kit in the carby if it has mixture screws one markedl for low speed and one marked h for high speed you can try winding out the low speed screw a bit but if that does not work it will definatly need a kit.

SOURCE: Replacing trimmer line with blade for stihl fs 90r trimmer

If you bought the trimmer new there should be a rod about 6" long and 1/8" thick. Above the trimmer head below the trimmer gearbox there is a hole. You have to put the rod in that hole and turn the head until that locks it from turning.

From there you can screw the trimmer head off by hand, or a strap wrench if it's really tight. It may be left hand threads.

I tried to use my trimmer for the first time this year and it won't start. It beeps and a small puff of smoke came out of the engine

Sounds like it got damp andthe motor brushes a stuck in thir holders take them out and give them a gentle rub with wet and dry paper on all surfaces after drying them gently by putting them on a radiator or similar warm place like an airing cupboard . Also put a roll of wet/dry paper into the brush holder holes so it presses onto the commutator while turning the motor This cleans the commutator If it does not work after replacing the brushes seek help from an appliance expert. Obviously if you can't get to the brushes to start with you need the expert from the start

I have an electric Bosch hedge trimmer, new ish. Just caught it on some metal, now it is making a high pitched noise and starts to smoke if I continue to use it. Have I wrecked it?

Sounds like a bearing is stuck and overheating when you use it. If you can get to the bearings, spray some lube in them like PB Blaster, and see if that helps. It's also possible that the blades are binding and causing the motor to overwork and the brushes are cooking. One or the other.

Why is my ryobi 18 volt trimmer smoking? I have had this 2.5 years and using it on lawn edges only.

The motor is failing. Most likely the brushes have failed, but this is all sealed and they cannot be replaced alone.

Strimmer instructions what mix do I use for a bluebird strimmer

Hi Chris the usual mix for any trimmer is 40 parts petrol to 1 part two stroke oil. Each tank of fuel I do usually gets a dribble to make it look slightly pinkish. Not to dark though or it smokes terribly.

Why is the trimmer head smoking/melting?

I think the melting is in your the head the feed that hods the line. That's the plastic bit. I have had this happen not just with one brand either. The problem is vibration. if things are not properly balanced the head vibrates, the resulting friction causes heat, that causes more wear and more heat. End of strimmer head! I not buy them two at a time on ebay!

I have a dewalt dw364 circular saw. the motor is running slower and sparking internally. The motor also starts smoking while using. A suggestion was to replace the brushes.

I agree with replacing the brushes, and don't use it until you do, so no damage is done to the motor. If it is smoking there is some overheating. Best regards and good luck.

Craftsman Sander 315.117120 has begun smoking after mere minutes of sanding and sounds much weaker than it once was. Is this definitely a motor burnout issue, the motor is no longer sold by sears for this...

Brush failure usually doesn't produce much smoke--check the motor windings for apparent overheating. Replacement of the machine appears to be the best solution. Good luck!
