I am a female 68 yrs. old. Do you think I could do this myself or should I order the belt and see if a neighbor would install it for me?

It sounds as though the belt has broken or jumped off the pulley. That would explain why you only hear a humm. That's the motor you hear most likely. If you are changing it yourself then pull up the top, remove the screws from top inside and from bottom front and remove the front. the belt is all the way at the bottom. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You have to disassemble the machine. So I would say call the neighbor if you feel that this is not within your ability. I will also let you know that a belt should only cost about $5-$10 . I hope i've helped you tackle you washer problem and are back up soon.

I would also like to say that your age and gender have no bearing on your abilities. My grandmother mowed her own grass and serviced her lawn tools until she passed at the young age of 83. So I say if you are comfortable doing this then go for it. If not then call the neighbor.

Drum not turning

That is a bad sign. If the buzzing starts when you press the start button and stops when you release its almost safe to say that the motor has a dead short or grounded out and causing that to happen. You can check the start switch by getting a multimeter and with the dryer unplugged take the wires off the switch, place a lead on each pin and press the start with meter set for continuity. If it shows continuity when presed and stops when released your motor is shot and needs to be replaced.
Now if you press the start button and the machine starts to hum and continues to hum its possible that something has gotten caught in the blower wheel and binding the motor up. Depending on the make and model the location and access to it vaaries.
If you can turn the drum and then the dryer starts you have a bad motor. The way the dryer works is when you initially push the start button, electricity is sent to the start winding, or stator, of the motor. This will in turn start the motor turning. From there the stator will drop out of the electrical process and at the same time the run winding, or rotor, will take over and the motor will continie to run. Your stator is damaged, has a burn spot, etc so by you turning the drum, the belt around the drum is moved which is attached to the motor pulley. You basically take the place of the stator. Long story short, you have a bad motor.

usually the humming sound is coming from the motor, try this, open the door, turn the drum with one hand and hold the door switch in with your other hand and have someone else push the start button at the same time, this might help the motor turn on but if it does you need a new motor,if you can't turn the drum you could have something stuck in the blower wheel or something jammed in the motor like a broken belt but like i said a humming sound is usually the motor.

Kenmore dryer Tub will not turn freely. Feels as if it's hung up. When you you press the start button it will just make a humming noise.

Hi,
A guess, sounds like you are hearing the motor running but no tub belt as it is probably broke. If you are asking then you probably don't know how to fix it so you should call a repairman. Or the tub guides are wore out either way a repairman can help.

When i turn on the dryer all i get is a humming noise, when i push in the button to start nothing happens

Usually this is a sign that either the motor is in a bind or bad. Sorry to say but the latter is usually the case.

Push start and motor hums, but nothing else works.

Hi, If you release the start button, does the hum stop? It sounds like hte start winding in the motor is bad. You can try and start it manualy by truning the timer on, open the door so that you can turn the drum with your hand. You will need anoth person there so that one of you can hold the door switch button in and the other push the start button. While pushing the start button, try turning the tub and see if it starts. This will give you an idea on the motor bad or not.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any more assistance.

Thanks
Vic

When you push start button, it makes noise but won't start.

This is a A.C. hum that you are hearing. this is a warning sign. You are experiencing motor failure. the actual windings inside of the motor are losing their potential to hold an even current due to breakage. the shutdown is a safety feature built in the control panel to prevent electrical spark/fire.
