You should have a plug in center of axle. Takes 14mm wrench.

Craftman model 917.258920 after cutting for a while the tractor moves slow when warm or will not move.

Looking at this breakdown part diagram for your hydro gear drive unit it has a filter, and hopefully a drain. Comparing it to a cold bottle of soda pop the moisture always goes to the warm side and puddles on the table but in this case it would be on the inside of your transaxle. So as the oil gets hot with repeated use it draws a little moisture every time, and more so if your plastic fan is broken. The 20w 50 oil polluted with water will foam up and fill your system with air which will not compress very well, like driving a nail with a rubber hammer. When you shut it off the air goes to the top of the oil and probably goes again until it foams again. My sugestion is to drain and change filter and refill with some 20w 50 motor oil. From personal experience it has fixed many slow hydros.PS: if the fan is broken or missing any blades it is a must to relace it and also run your RPMs on the engine all the way to generate enough air from that fan to cool the hydro unit.

Husqvarna gear oil

I assume you are referring the the transaxle? The replacement oil in the transaxle is as follows: This model ran either a Hydro-Gear or Tuff-Torque transaxle. If Hydro-Gear use: 20W50 synthetic. If Tuff-Torque use: 10W30 synthetic.

Tansmission oil type for model# 917.254740

Your Craftsman is equipped with a Agri-Fab transaxle, the predecessor to the Hydro-Gear brand. The recommended oil is 10w-30. Unfortunately, the transaxle on your craftsman tractor is not serviceable. It is sealed for life. The only way to change the oil is to remove the unit from the tractor, tip it upside down and drain the oil out the reservoir plug.

Sorry to hear about your aren't the only one having it. Sounds like a hydrostatic problem or a pulley freewheeling on a shaft somewhere. If you bought your tractor at Sears they might could help you---the husky and are the craftsman are the same. Husky uses a little better engine is all. Hope this helps.

Wat typy of oil to use in the hydro gear box

My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem.
For your mower, the transaxle is a sealed unit. There's no distick or other way to check it. They don't want the operatpr messing around with it. But I know I wouldn't go to the shop unless I had to, so you probably won't either. I put their phone number at the bottem, and added a link to your manual here.

I hope I've helped. Thank you! Dane

There seems to be a problem with the hydro transmission. is there a way to service the fluid? the transmission grinds and has no power. i put on a new belt but it didnt seem to help.

First make sure the transaxle is not leaking. The transaxle is supposed to be a sealed unit requiring no service. But if you remove the back hitch plate from tractor, there is either a vent hose with a screw out fittting or a 1/4 allen wrench plug on top of transaxle. If you purchase a battery filling bulb from sears auto center,it will fit down that hole to suction out the oil,do the when oil is warm to speed the process up it will take about 10 min to remove the oil,(about 1.5 quarts) add oil to within 1.5 inch of the top but do not overfill, you must leave a space of air for expansion, Refill with ams oil or mobil 1 synthetic motor oil 15w-50 or 20w50, it must be synthetic oil, If this doesnt improve it is too late for your tranaxle,if it does improve it do this once a year.

I have a 20 hp craftsman lawn( hydro gear transaxle ) tractor in terrific shape that losses drive on a grade. I replaced the worn drive belt and it was good for the first few mows, Now Im right back to...

It sounds like the oil in transaxle is degraded. The transaxle is supposed to be a sealed unit requiring no service but over time the oil will get dirty enough to cause problems like you are describing.Remove the back hitch plate and look at the transaxle it will have a rubber vent hose or a 1/4 alllen wrench fitting on top. You will need to purchase a battery suction bulb from sears automotive and use it to remove as much oil from transaxle as possible. Warm the transaxle up first by running it around, then suction the oil out.Refill with a good synthetic motor oil 15w-50 or 20w-50 like Amsoil or Mobil 1.Do not use transmission fluid or hydraulic fluid. When adding the new oil back fill it to within 1.5 in from the top,be sure to allow this amount of air space in top of transaxle for expansion.
