Network adaptor question

I am planning on buying a network adapter in order to go online. The only problem is...I don't have a wireless router. I have a modem and internet explorer. Is there anyway that the net. adapte can pick up signal from my modem only? It would be in the basement and the computer is on the floor above. Will I need to buy a wireless router?
-Thanks for your help

You can buy a wireless bridge which will give wireless capabilties. Netgear makes one and others.
but you can hook up with a wiireless adaptor unless you have a wireless rounter or a bridge

I want to get the TIVO AG0100 wireless adapter. I do not have wifi in my house so will it still work? I'm not planning on getting wireless for my computer.

Dear,
Since it's an adapter and not a router, it will not work if you don't have a previously installed wireless network.
You might buy a wireless router and connect it to your computer and use Tivo at the same time.

If you would like to use your office computer "wirelessly", then yes you must purchase a wireless network adapter so that your computer and wireless router can communicate with each other.

If the wireless router will be installed relatively close to your computer, you can plug the computer into one of the ports located in the back of the wireless router.

What is network adapter mean

A network adaptor is an interface device that allows your PC to communicate with other computers and the internet. There are wireless and wired adaptors.

Wireless adaptors usually connect your PC to the network through a wireless router and modem. Wired adaptors (also known as ethernet adaptors) connect your PC to another computer, a router or a modem using a cable.

Buy a wireless router to connect to.
Your USB adaptor is useless without one unless that is you can connect to someone else's unsecured network.

Can not connect to internet

My first guess is that your Dlink ADSL modem is really a modem router, so you are getting double routing. Sometimes this works just fine, though, so I'm not confident that's the whole explanation.
You'll need to setup your IP plan carefully
set the D-Link modem(router?) to bridging mode & the DLink wireless router does the login to Exetel.
DLink wireless router WAN side: DHCP + login to Exetel
DLink wireless router LAN side: 192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DHCP on: range 192.168.0.10 to .20
DNS Servers: 220.233.0.3, 220.233.0.4
with PC's wireless adaptor set to DHCP
so picks up eg:
IP address: 192.168.0.10
Gateway address: 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers: 220.233.0.3, 220.233.0.4

Hi, did you provide the network key/password when you setup the wireless conection on your computer? Is it detecting your wireless router (you should see your SSID or network name) when you click on your wireless icon (in the taskbar) and chose "show wireless connections". If you can acess to your router via it's configuration page(type the router's default IP address in your browser) you can go check the settings and change the key/passphrase if you dont remember it. If all of this is not working, you can also start from stratch. Reset the router to factory settings (check your manual) then reconfigure it the way you want, put the new infos in your wireless network connections properties and try again. let me know with more specific details if you still cant do it

Vista Wireless Problem: Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG

Hi Pete,

You sound like you know what you're doing, so forgive me if these suggestions seem foolish or patronising..
Does your laptop have a wireless button?
8f45b35.jpg

When you go to Internet Options and click the Connections tab, have you checked 'Never Dial a Connection'? This is essential..
I have exactly the same ethernet card and network adaptor, but haven't had any problems, and we have 2 laptops and 2 pc's here all detecting our router okay so..
It's definitely not MAC filtering on the router, as you would still see the network in your list..
I can only suggest uninstalling the Intel Pro Wireless driver and downloading a fresh one from here.
That'll reset default settings at least..
Hope this helps
Let me know how you get on.. If I face this problem I want to know how to fix it too!

It depends on your equipment. If they have network built in, need a couple of cables and a router. If not could install wired or wireless and use a wired or wireless router.
