Question about Nikon COOLSCAN 5000 ED Film Scanner

1 Answer

PC stopped recognizing Nikon Coolscan 8000

I've been using this scanner for years on this same computer and it just stopped recognizing the scanner. Seems like I've had some problems with this before, but after unplugging, turning it on and off, inserting the slide with it turned off, then on, etc., etc. I could always get it going again. This time I've tried everything and reinstalled the driver and software. Nothing is working.

Yes, the scanner powers up like normal, and I tried a new firewire cable. The device manager says the IEEE card is working properly(this is the right one for the firewire, right?). Thanks for the suggestions. Like I said, tinkering with reinstalling software, and turning it on and off, restarting computer with it on or off, etc. usually works. Haven't had this problem in a long time. No luck fixing it this time, however.

Forgot to mention that the computer doesn't give you the audible chime when you plug it in or unplug it like it normally does when it's working properly.

I haven't tried another computer. I'm only marginally competent with computer technical stuff, but I did think about reinstalling the driver for the firewire card. Just wasn't sure how to do it. Do I have to dig up the installation disk, or can you get the driver online?

Thank you to everyone that replied. I did delete the firewire card driver and reinstalled it. Didn't work. I loaded the Nikon software on my laptop and hooked the scanner up to it. The laptop did not recognize the scanner as well. The light on the scanner idicates that it's working, but there's got to be a problem with the scanner since two computers can't find it. I just ordered a Minolta on Ebay and will give it a try. Thanks for everyone's help.

Does the scanner power up at all when plugged into the USB? Have you tried different ports or another computer?

You can try uninstalling your USB root ports from device manager and restarting. Also Updating your chipset drivers may help.

Ah Firewire ;) Have you tried reinstalling the firewire card drivers? Make sure you press the "delete driver" button if there is one/

If you have vista goto -> Control Panel -> Device Manager (classic view enabled) Find your 1394 card listed in there and right click and go uninstall.

XP you will have to goto Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.

Hi! My computer (Macbook pro) doesn't seem to recognize my Nikon Coolscan IV software and I get the following message

You've not said what the message is but I suspect that the software is too old to be used on the macbook if it is running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or if you are running snow leopard, it may be a non-intel version of the software. It may be asking you to instal rosetta which would be on your snow leopard instal disk.

If the Nikon website does not have updated software you could try vuescan which according to this page http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/nikon_coolscan_iv_ed.html does work with the film scanner and you can download a demo version which you can trial before you buy. Hope this helps.

Nikon 4.0.2 isn't supported on 10.5

I suggest you look at VueScan which does work under 10.5 and 10.6 with your scanner, and they have a free download to test first

Firewire. USB2

Either or is my understanding- the scanner will accept either. I can see no need for both.
