To adjust the contrast, Press Darkness. Each time you press the button, the LED labeled with the selected mode turns on. You can choose from the following darkness modes: 1>Lighten: works well with dark print. 2>Normal: works well with standard typed or printed documents. 3>Darken: works well with light print or faint pencil markings.
Before replacing this awesome printer try this steps first.
First check the paper you're using, load the paper with the printing side down.
In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Print .
Make sure the appropriate printer is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties.
Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.
Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
Paper type : If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, select it instead of Automatic .
Paper size : Make sure that this option matches the paper loaded in the product.
Make sure that the image file has enough resolution for the size of the printed picture. Although many photo applications can enlarge an image or part of an image to any size, eventually the individual pixels become visible and the whole image looks blurry.
This product has an EconoMode option for
printing drafts of documents. Using EconoMode can use less toner and
decrease the cost per page. However, using EconoMode can also reduce

The first thing that comes to mind is to verfiy that you have not set the printer to only print in black or grayscale.
Check your printer settings by following these steps.

Make sure that your All-in-One is selected and then click Preferences . The Preferences dialog box opens.
Click the Paper/Quality tab.
Options on the Features tab include:
Print quality : If you are unhappy with the quality of your printouts, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
Paper Options - Type is : Click the drop-down box under Type is . If one of the options matches your paper type exactly, click it rather than Automatic .
Paper Options - Size is : Make sure that it matches your paper.
Verify that this option is NOT selected ===> Print All Text as Black : Prints all text characters as black, regardless of the document color settings for text.
