Question about Sony HVL-F32X TTL Flash

1 Answer

Hot shoe plastic section broke on flash unit

I dropped the camera from an end table onto the carpet. The Sony DSC-F828 camera and Sony HVL-F32X flash were connected and broke apart at the hot shoe insert. Only the flash hot shoe plastic broke, everything else works.

Is there a way to replace the hot shoe part of the flash?

Thanks for any advise

I managed it by buying a broken (non-working) F32X from an auction service for something like 5 bucks. I just made sure (by looking at the photos) that the hotshoe was intact.

Here's how to disassemble and replace foot (I got to this by trial and luckily no error ^^).

  1. Unscrew 2 small screws located under the battery flip cover.
  2. Put the lamp (moving part) in the upright position.
  3. Unscrew 1 small screw above the infared sensor (below the main lamp part which you moved to the upright position).
  4. Remove the cover of the infared sensor by gently pulling forward.
  5. On two sides of the infared sensor there are two small clips which hold the 2 casing pieces together. Pull them away from the casing just a tiny bit and use something to keep them in this position (I used 2 small nails). Then pull the pieces apart gently.
  6. Just behind the hotshoe casing you can see a small plastic inset -- place a screwdriver sideways between this inset and the hotshoe to help you separate the two casing parts. Be careful when doing that, don't use too much force, wiggle the casing instead to make this easier (this is the most tricky part).
  7. When the electronics is exposed, there is a single screw in the middle of the motherboard. Remove the screw and gently pull the motherboard away from the casing. You do not have to pull it all the way or disconnect any cables, you just need to make sure the bottom battery connectors are pulled out of the casing just a little, because then under the two middle battery connectors (looking from the top, as if you were putting the batteries in) you can see two screws!
  8. Unscrew those two screws, and the hotshoe will come apart. Pull it out gently and remove a single electrical connector that connects it to the flash.
Do this in case of your working lamp (with a broken hotshoe) and your replacement lamp (with a good hotshoe), and just move the good hotshoe to your working lamp.

Took me about an hour to do this (most time was spent on trying to figure out how to disassemble the lamp), and the lamp works perfectly.

Warning: better test disassembly on the replacement lamp, since even if you break it, all you need it for is the hotshoe, so you can practice on it. Only after you learn how to disassemble the F32X do this on your working lamp.

Hope this helps!

Make sure Flash Shoe option is Off in setup menu then check flash light.
Does camera give any blinking error code when flash fails to fire?
Does flash pop up when you press shutter button to take picture in low light?
Let me know to find out possible cause of problem.

My flash won't charge. the yellow charge light won't go off when the camera is charged. The flash will pop open but won't flash. I have purchased and installed a new battery but it didn't solve the...

Either the internal thyristor charging circuit has failed or the flash capacitor is unserviceable.

Neither fault is worth repairing. Buy a small auto-exposure flashgun and use it in the hotshoe; they're dirt cheap and there are plenty of used ones for free if you ask on FreeCycle.

You'll need to go into the DSC-V1 menus to enable the hot shoe on the top plate of the camera and you'll find that even the smallest and least specified flashgun will give better results, but try to get one with at least two aperture settings within the range f2.8 to f8. Anything outside that range is useless to you as that's the entire aperture range on the DSC-V1. You'll also need to ensure that when taking photos, the camera is set to the same aperture as the flashgun. To do this set the camera mode switch to "A" for aperture priority mode and use the thumbwheel to select the correct aperture, the camera will choose the appropriate shutter speed. You can also use "M" for manual mode in which you set both the aperture and choose the shutter speed. At night, choose 1/60 but the actual exposure will be measured in the thousandths of seconds in which the flash is illuminated.

If you're rich or lucky you'll get a Sony HVL-F32X flashgun; it dwarfs the camera and is very powerful but everything is fully automatic with no manual overrides. For this flashgun, the hotshoe menu setting must be "OFF".

Can;t turn the tightening knob to mount the flash? Maybe the pin lock?

I'M UNCLEAR AS TO WHETHER YOUR ISSUE IS WITH THE LOCKING PIN OR THE COLLAR. STANDARD FLASHES, WITHOUT A "LOCKING PIN", A PAIR OF CHANNEL LOCK PLIERS CAN BE USED, AFTER WRAPPING THE JAWS WITH SOMETHING GIVING, LIKE ELECTRICAL TAPE, OR WRAPPED RUBBER BANDS. THE COLLAR CAN USUALLY BE LOOSENED IN THIS MANNER, IF IT HAS "BOTTOMED OUT" OR GOTTEN STUCK ON ONE END OR THE OTHER OF THE THREADED FOOT SUPPORT. IF YOUR ISSUE IS WITH A "STUCK PIN" THEN PLEASE DISREGARD THIS ADVICE.

Try resetting the camera. It is next to the battery release. I had a similar issue and posted help. No remedey. So, after praying about this issue, I was lead to power it down and eliminate all the power by taking out the battery push the power button and many others. I found the reset button pushed it and it is all working now. The praying for a solution was key. Praise Jesus. DRD

Do you have the camera set for flash? If it were set for no flash (diagonal bar thru lighting bolt) the F32X and the camera do not communicate.

Failure of flash sync in F828?

I experience similar failure sometimes. I un-mount the flash (or adapter) from the hot shoe and put it back, and am back in business. The reason is, at least in my case. loose contact, resulting from movement of the flash/adapter in the shoe.
