Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I had a hard drive problem so I bought a new 500GB HD and during the installation I selected 'Partition' by accident. I re-installed Windows XP as the OS. When I now look at my hard drive capacity it shows only 127GB but there are no other drives that can be selected. So it seems like I have lost most of my new HD space. How can I: Either change it back so it is just one 500GB-HD? OR Find the remaining space on my HD. When looking in 'MyComputer' it shows just one drive (i), where are the other partitioned drives? I dont mind having the drive partitioned (even though I dont know the first thing about it), I just want my capacity back, can anyone help here? Thanks Don - UK.

FIRST the short ANSWER; Open Windows Explorer and drag and drop files/folders to new drive.

LONG ANSWER; Connect drive, during boot up of PC, and ENTER (CMOS) SETUP. See if drive is listed.

IF LISTED resume boot and see if Windows FINDS new Hardware and installs it. If so go to short answer.
If not seen by windows but seen by CMOS the drive must be PARTITIONED and then FORMATTED. OR

IF disk came with install CD run install to assure all needed USB drivers are present for windows to install disk through USB port.

Once USB drivers are installed reboot PC and see if Windows finds new hardware.

IF windows still does not install new HD but CMOS shows drive is present, the drive needs to be partitioned.

To partition new drive type DISKPART at dos prompt or in START RUN OPEN and press enter.

At the DISKPART> ( prompt ) type LIST DISK then press enter.

Example: DISKPART> LIST DISK press enter

FIND the number assigned to the new drive in the list (#), then type SELECT DISK #

the info returned in the dos window should be;

Example: Disk 2 is now the selected disk

Type CREATE PARTITION EXTENDED

Example: DISKPART> CREATE PARTITION EXTENDED press enter

Now shutdown the PC then reboot. Windows should now Find hardware and install new disk.

Click START then COMPUTER the new disk should be listed.

Right click on the Drive and select FORMAT use NTFS format.

now you should be able to drag and drop files/folders to your new disk.

Hi, My Laptop is a Eurocom D900T, and I tried to make a fresh install to have a Windows XP Professional. I checked that the order of the booting sequence is : CD-ROM first, IDE HD and then...

When I've had that issue in the past, it was because the hard drive controller on the motherboard had the ACPI setting enabled. Windows doesn't have the necessary driver built in to see the drive in ACPI mode, so going into the BIOS of the system (usually F2 or F10 during POST) and disabling ACPI in the advanced settings has made it work for me in the past

Your problem could be that the hard disk is not ACTIVE.
Boot up with a DOS disk (floppy or CD or USB) and run FDISK, select 4 to Display Partition Info. If the C drive does not have A under Status then press ESC and select 2 to Set active partition and then set Partition C to active.

How to install xp in HP Pavilion dv6 1030 us Laptop and how to repartition my C: drive especially I have still 150 GB free space in C drive Please help me in this case Thanks in advance.

get a winxp installer CD, you can repartition your drive on the first part of the winxp installation process. Prepare your drivers for your machine especially the network and USB drivers which you will need to copy and transfer files firstly.
If u meant of installing an additional OS like winxp to your extra space, you need a boot loader to switch between OSes.hope this helps

I am trying to install a Maxtor Basics 500GB External Desktop Hard Drive and cannot see the drive on my PC. I'm assuming it is not installed. I operate a Windowss XP Platform. Help!

Right click on my computer and go to manage, then go to storage, disk manager and see if the disk shows up there, you may need to partition it first, you can make one partition of that hard drive. If it is not in there, check the jumpers and make sure it is not the same as the main HD. The main drive should be master and the second drive should be slave, or make it cable select and do it in the bios.

You can't insert a Hard drive from another PC because when it was installed on the old PC it was setup to work with the hardware for that particular computer.

You will need to reinstall a fresh copy of windows on it to make it work with the new PC it's in.Boot from CD run windows setup, format the drive then do a fresh install.

This should fix the problem, if you have any new info or need further help with any of that post back. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

Dell Vostro 200 desktop with Windows XP is not able to handle two

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.

You have to go online and search then download the drivers for preparing SATA laptop harddrives for installation of Windows XP otherwise during installation it will tell you there is no hard drive found.
