Question about RTO Waste King AH-780-UL Quick&Hot Instant Hot Water Dispenser - Tank Only

1 Answer

My AH-780 was installed 4 years ago to replace an Insinkerator, which rusted through after 11 years. It has since developed a slow leak out of the bottom of the unit, just as has been reported by others here. After contacting the manufacturer and finding out that the unit is not repairable and that they do not sell replacement parts, I decided to deconstruct it to find out why it was leaking. What I found is that although the cosmetics of the unit appear to make it look like a well designed unit, the internals is very poorly designed. The O rings used are woefully inadequate, 2 of which failed. The bottom O ring had compressed to the point of failure and hot water was slowly leaking from the tank, accounting for the drip out of the bottom of the unit. Also, the O ring that seals the heating element on the side of the unit had failed, resulting in corrosion at the contacts on the outside of the unit. I would not recommend purchasing this unit.. it seems to have been designed to fail, possibly catastrophically. For present owners of this unit, I would recommend that a drip pan be placed under it and cut off the water supply if leaving your house for extended periods.

Insinkerator stainless tank does not have anode rod to protect from rusting. So these water heaters rust out at welds. And must be replaced. And this is frequent problem.
Copy following link for installing under-counter water heater and see manuals for various models available. Non-insinkerator water heaters have anode rod to protect from rusting:

I have an insinkerator hot water dispenser with stainless steel tank, and the tank is now leaking. I'm wondering if it can be fixed or needs to be replaced

Replace water heater if tank wall is leaking.
These things have short warranty period.
Stainless steel will theoretically last longer, but steel tank water heaters have replaceable anode rod to prevent rust-out.

Drain valve plastic slow leak 81V-80D

If the drip is coming out of drain valve: Put a hose cap over end of drain valve.
If water is seeping out of cracked drain vale, then replace it.
If the leak is seeping around previously sealed threads, then tank may be rusted beyond repair.

Bubbling water at pressure releaf valve on top of valve. valve is rusted. rusty water in pan. Unit was installed new two years ago. Offer suggestions. Thanks

Rusted water usually means anode rod depleted and tank is rusting. Change 570241 anode rod every year or so.
Boiling water could mean bad thermostat causing run-away heating so water is released out of TP valve. Replace 994062 thermostat for 4 gallon.
Leaking water at TP valve could mean bad TP valve: replace TP valve with generic valve from hardware store.

Hi, my insinkerator hot water dispenser is leaking from the bottom screw. It is a couple of years old. Moder SST

My unit is 3 1.2 tears old. It started to delay the flowing of hot water. Today I held the lever down until hot water came out but I noticed water leaking from inside the unit. I figured that the tank failed, and since it was over 3 years old I decided to open it up. What I found was that there is a plastic tube at the top of the unit that was very discolored and brittle which developed a crack. when I touched it it completely severed. I called the Insinkerator hotline at 1800-558-5700 and they told me that opening the unit voids the warranty. I said that it appears to be out of warranty and I needed just the plastic tube for repair. The per on on the phone said that as a one time courtesy that a new unit would be shipped to me free of charge and that I could install it myself or they will have a tech do it. I opted to do it myself. Hope this helps

Slow leak drips from bottom of 4 year old model

Hi

Please try and remove the cap by turning it clockwise and counter clock wise to remove it. If it doesn't come off then empty the water dispenser and use glue to fix the leak. See this link to see which type of glue should be used--- Glue Usage

Slow leak drips from bottom of 4 year old model

You can probably repair this by removing the fittings and replacing any plastic compression rings with new ones. Everything else can be cleaned with grade "0000" steel wool. This will get rid of any deposits without damaging the surfaces. ! or @ careful wraps of Teflon Tape to the MALE threads will help get a good seal.
