Going to voicemail

When I miss a call, it is taking way too long for the caller to get to my voicemail. People think I don't have voicemail. I called myself and waited a minute and a half before getting to voicemail. How can I shorten the amount of time before unanwered calls go to voicemail?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Going to voicemail

The phone you have can go on several different Norstar phone systems and you can have several different types of voice mail. Your voice mail (and possibly the phone system) needs to have programming changes, not the telephone. Your first step is to determine which Nortel phone system you have and also what model voice mail. You will need manuals for the phone system and voice mail. Hopefully you already have a programming or administration manual for the voice mail. Someone should have gotten this information when the system was first installed but that could have been many years ago.

What happens when you are waiting for that time? Do you hear absolutely nothing? Instead of being sent directly to your voice mail box, it may be sending callers to a voice mail branch where you would normally have a recording "press 1 for this, 2 for that" If there is no recording the system will wait for a response that the caller has no idea of and usually replay the message 3 times before defaulting to your mailbox (in this case a blank message). That is my best guess with the information I have from you so far.

How do outside callers get my voicemail instead of the operators voicemail?I have a NEC Dterm80 phone model DTH-8D-2BKTEL.

Outside callers, only get an operators voicemail, when your phone can't be reached. For whatever reason. No contact to a cell, switched off, airplane mode, you name it.
Then when you have contact to the provider, you should setup your voicemail, the way your provider would like you to do.

My Vtech phone answering machine no longer records incoming messages on its base. Help

From the sound of it it I think its either: your mailbox is full or the feature has been turn off accidentally.

Vtech's support recommend the following (I've removed things like 'make sure its plugged in' and 'is your answering system is turned on' etc..)

1 Some answering systems have an announce only option, which plays your greeting but won't record messages. Make sure your system is set to record messages.

2 Your answering system's message capacity may be full. You must erase old messages to make room for new ones.

3 If you have voicemail service in addition to your answering system, your caller's message may be going into voicemail before your answering system picks up the call. Program your voicemail to pick up at least 2 rings after your answering system is set to answer the call.

As the receptionist I take calls and then transfer them to the person the caller disires to speak with. For example, if I am on a call and the person I am speaking with would like to speak with my boss, I...

A couple of things, but first. When you TRANSFER a call to your boss using the transfer button, he key to getting rid of the call is to hang up. But that's not your problem. When we install voice mail systems, we reserve 3 buttons; one for VM TRANSFER, one for 2 WAY TRANSFER, and one for VM RECORD. It's easier to link you to the OM of a TDA system than explain it, so here's the link

Pdf page 170 will give you the table for setting up your 94,91 and 90 codes for the above features.
Basically, you press PROGRAM, the button, and dial, for example, 94 500 SAVE to store the VMT . You use it by pressing that button while you on the call (no hold) and either dial your boss' extension or press his DSS button. If you use the 2-way transfer, you can actually put his number under one button and carry on a 2-way conversation with the outside party. Kind of like you would do with the old 'pink slip' messages.

I don't have the user manual, don't know what flashing light on phone means, don't know how to erase missed calls on caller ID

You have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone. Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.

Since you neglected to specify the model of your Uniden DECT 6.0 system I can only suggest you select it from the list beginning here to download a copy of the manual.

Unable to leave voice mail, says good-bye

I don't think the voice mail is going bad.

On my 4424D+, I can turn off voice mail.
I use this feature when I'm gone for an extended period of time so I don't come back to 100 VMs.

Dial into your voice mail.
Choose the prompt for Call Answer Mode. (Option 8 on my phone.)
Then choose the prompt for Record Mode. (Option 1 for me.) This allows callers to record voice mails on your line.

My message light is still on after erasing the voicemail message. What can I do to turn the light off?

is the nec dsx telephone voicemail light red or green...?
if it's green, it's not the voicemail light, rather, it's the caller id missed call indicator. just look through your missed calls and it will go out... or if you have the admin software, go to class of service, station, and disable the caller-id alert lamp.

Phones don't ring

Caller ID is a service that is provided by your telephone service provider and not the phone. If the phone company isn't sending your line Caller ID data, your phone won't display it. As for getting the handsets to ring, try pushing the volume up key while the handset is off, the more times you push the button, the louder the ring will get until you are at max ring volume. Also, some models have a "Do Not Disturb" feature which turns the ringer off. Without knowing which model phone you have I cannot tell you how to turn this feature on/off. but you can look it up in your manual online at

Picking up calls while caller is leaving a voicemail

Only if you turn on Live Call screening or executive override. Both of those options require some system programming and have some negative features.
