Gateway laptop error

Which operating system ?
Restoring your Windows 7 Gateway computer to its original factory settings is a great way to get rid of pesky viruses you can't seem to remove from your computer, or simply to remove old programs and files from your computer and start with a clean slate.
Your Windows 7 Gateway computer will likely run faster as a result of deleting old and unnecessary files.
It's also a good idea to restore your Windows 7 Gateway computer to its original factory settings if you plan on selling it, or passing it along to a family member or friend.
Recover From Windows 7 Home Screen
Click the "Start" icon in the lower-left corner of your Windows 7 home screen.
Click "All Programs" in the Start menu, then click "Gateway".
Click "Gateway Recovery Management" to open the Gateway Recovery Management program.
Click the "Restore" header, then click "Restore System To Factory Default".
Click "Yes" in the "Confirm Restoration" dialog box, then click "Yes".
Click "OK" in the dialog box warning you that all of the personal data on your computer will be deleted. Your computer will automatically restart.
When your computer restarts the restoration process will begin. The process could take anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes.
Click "OK" when a dialog appears telling you that the computer has been restored to its original factory settings and that you need to reboot your Gateway Windows 7 computer.
Your computer will reboot.
After the computer restarts you will need to configure Windows 7 with your personal preferences.
Recover at Startup
Turn on or restart your computer and hold down "Alt" while clicking "F10" during startup until you are redirected to the Gateway Recovery Management program.
Click "Restore System From Factory Default".
Click "Next" to begin the restoration process.

Start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically

If Startup repair is not working then use a system utility tool like Reginout to fix windows registry errors or restore windows to an earlier state:
Restore computer/ windows 7:
Navigate to the Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools program group.Click on the System Restore program icon.
Click Next > on the Restore system files and settings window.Choose the restore point that you want to use.

Note: Check the Show more restore points checkbox to see more than the most recent restore points.
Note: Any restore points that you created, scheduled restore points that Windows 7 created, and those created automatically during the installation of certain programs will be listed here. You can not use System Restore to undo Windows 7 changes to a date that a restore point does not exist.
Click Next >.
Click Finish on the Confirm your restore point window to begin the System Restore.
Note: Windows 7 will shut down to complete the System Restore so be sure to save any work you might have open in other programs before continuing.
Important: System Restore will not revert any of your non-system files like documents, email, music, etc. to a previous state. These types files are completely unaffected by System Restore. If your intention with this tool was to recover a deleted non-system file, try using a file recovery program instead of System Restore.
Click Yes to the Once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue? dialog box.
System Restore will now restore Windows 7 to the state that was recorded in the restore point you chose earlier.
Note: The System Restore process could take several minutes as you see the "Please wait while your Windows files and settings are being restored" message. Your computer will then reboot as normal when complete.
Immediately after logging in to Windows 7 after the reboot, you should see a message that System Restore completed successfully.
Click Close.
Check to see if whatever Windows 7 problem you were troubleshooting has been corrected by this System Restore.
If the problem still persists, you can repeat the steps above and choose another restore point if one is available.
If this restoration caused a problem, you can always undo this particular System Restore.

I want to restore my windows 98

Under normal circumstances, Windows is capable of detecting and recovering from registry errors automatically. If Windows is incapable of this, a previous copy of the registry can be restored manually. Windows makes and stores a backup of the registry when you start your computer successfully each day. By default, five previous copies or the registry are stored. To restore one of these previous copies:
  1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you are running Windows Me, start your computer with the startup disk.
  2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

  3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
  4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER.NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.

  5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer

AVG will no install error 0x800736b1 also retrirve my desktop

Hi there. My name is Alex and Im here to help solve your problem

First of all, AVG has always had a problem installing when windows updates are enabled and download and install automatically. I would recommend uninstalling all updates that have been installed to your computer and disable automatic updates which I will explain to you below

To uninstall the updates.
Click start, settings and click control panel.
On the icon add and remove programs, please double click
You will now see all the programs and updates installed on your computer. The microsoft updates are located near to the bottom of the list and there may be a lot of them installed. You can only uninstall one update at a time. You may be prompted that uninstalling a windows update may cause a program not to work properly, this is normal so you can continue uninstalling them. When you have uninstalled these updates please restart your computer.

To disable the automatic updates

Right click on your icon My computer or My pc which is located on the desktop or on the start menu (if you are running windows xp) and select properties
You will then see a sub menu called 'Automatic updates' and inside this menu you will have the choice to disable the updates

If you are using windows xp and you have system restore enabled on your computer, then you will be able to take the computer back to an earlier time when it was working correctly. Please save all documents first to insure that nothing will be lost if you decide to do a 'system restore'. There is a very friendly wizard to help you restore your computer. You can get to the system restore by clicking start, programs, accesories, system tools and selecting system restore.

Regarding your problem about your desktop disappearing, to restore your icons on the desktop, right click anywhere on the desktop and select organise icons and be sure that the heading 'show desktop icons' is ticked. This will restore your desktop items

Last of all try installing AVG, if you still experience problems with this issue, then please let me know. Im happy to help
