Question about Jenn-Air JED8230 Electric Cooktop

Open Question

I have a Jen-Air cook top modules that are short 1 pin.

I have a Jen-Air cook top that accepts the 5 pin modules (4 flat pins and one round in the center. I have modules from my old house that are 4 pin, (3 flat and one round) and would like to know what modifications I need to make so the 4 pin modules work on my current cook top. I found the following description of my problem online, but it fails to describe the solution

Basically, all Jenn Air cartridges of the same design are interchangeable. Older ranges/cooktops that used cartridges with 4 flat blade plug-in terminals will require the appliance's cartridge receptacle wiring modified or a newer 3 terminal cartridge to be adapted by the adding of a forth terminal and its wiring altered before it be able to be used on such older appliances.

Can anyone please pick up where he left off?
Thank you,
Lampie The Clown

Down draft kitchen cooktop: i can't use a recommended 6" exhaust because of structural conflicts, but could use a 3". Will this mess anything up with the blower on the cook top?

This would be a bad idea. The problem would be that not all of the exhaust gases will leave the kitchen. (Thus it could make you ill or be fatal - it will not do be a problem for the blower.) For a very short run you can use 5" duct but not after any sections of 6" or 3 1/4" x 10" rectangular ducting. The maximum duct length can be 100'; however 5" round duct has a higher equivalence length than 6" round duct.

You would be better off putting the cooktop on an exterior wall and directly venting it to the outside with rectangular ducting.

The installation and owner's manual are available from GE. Go to Then search for JP389.

I wish that I had better news.

Have Jenn-Air 36" gas cooktop w. 5 burners, black. Mdl JGC8536ADB. Plastic knobs keep splitting, even if we remember to push down before turning. Have replaced two sets and now we're down to two working...

Thanks for using FixYa. There are a few things to check for. Make sure the electrode (the small metal piece that the spark comes off from) is clean and the holes in the burner are clean, use a pin or paper clip to clean out the burner holes and not a tooth pick as these can break off and make things worse. Example of a burner. The next thing to check for are the ignition switches under the surface control knobs, the switches can twist and break and keep the spark module on and the spark keeps "clicking" even when the burner is light. If every thing looks good, you may have a bad spark module, replace it.
The switches or the range control knobs may have got wet and are completing the circuit to the spark module thus causing it to continuously click or fire off sparks continuously. Use your hair/blow dryer and blow some hot air around the spark module area.

This is a typical spark module wire diagram--

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Solid element cooking top slow in heating up

It sounds like you have lost 1 leg of 220V power to the unit. Chances are, one of the elements shorted to ground, then blew itself open.

Find the breaker or fuse box, and reset/replace breakers/fuse. If it blows again, you'll have to locate which element is bad, or where the short is.

I can help more once I know if there was a breaker trip, or fuse was blown. I will also need to know if it is one element, or all the elements., that exhibit the same problem. I can instruct you on identifying the bad element as well, and replacement elements are available.

Gas cook top

Most of the time when I come out for a service call with this problem, it is usually because the burner cap is not seated properly on the base. Look at the burner and make sure there are no uneven gaps. Most of the time you will have to rotate the burner cap till a notch or pin "seats" into place. Most burner caps just sit on the bases, and so they get knocked off or moved when the cooktop is cleaned or installed. Hope this helps!
