How do I make the spindle chuck stay in the quill of my model FDM 16 SPC drill press? I have forced it down on a block of wood. It will stay for a while that fall out.

16 speed should have a Morse taper
for the std drill chuck

to fit a different chuck the morse taper needs to be emery sanded
and the replacement chuck should stick
after using the wood block pressure press method

if not you need a new morse taper for that spindle chuck

hint
i had my drill accuracy and off center spin tolerance down to one thou

with stretched old belts I got more speeds than 16
for special jobs
my 16 speed used a morse taper two for the drill chuck

this picture says its a spindle chuck

Chuck will only turn side to side after repair of gears box after

I need more information to answer your problem.
The chuck normally has movement turning because of the clutch gear.
It is possible if you had a gear strip or spindle break that there are pieces of metal in the grease that have jammed your new gears. I would recommend tearing down completely, remove all the grease, thoroughly clean gearcase, regrease & reassemble.

Drill will not rotate

Did you have to set the chuck into the spindle, or when you got the press, was the chuck already attached to the spindle? With the drill press I got (different brand), I had to set the chuck in the spindle and I put pressure on the chuck to set it in by placing a bit in the chuck and drilling in a piece of wood, which placed pressure on the chuck. If that's not the issue, check to see that the pulleys are turning ( flip the top open). Also check the tension of the pulleys (machine OFF) If there is nothing apparent or obviuosly not working, and if the press is new, yes, I would return it.

Push the rubber sleve off the drill bit and up the drill bit then the plastic ring. release the clip around the spindle. Slide the clip and chuck sleve forward and remove the ball sitting in the spindle. You should then be able to pull the bit from the machine. If it does not want to come hold the bit in a vice and tap the spindle off the end of the bit using a suitable punch. Rebuild chuck in reverse.

Fleetwood 50 drill press chuck connects to the spindle how?

The chuck on 99% of the drill presses is just a press fit. The end of the spindle where the chuck goes on is slightly tapered to hold it on. Make sure the end of the spindle and inside surface of the chuck are very clean. With the motor off, raise the table high enough so you can still get the chuck on the spindle then turn the handle to lower the chuck against the table and press it firmly against the table to wedge the spindle in the chuck. There shouldn't be any need for anything more than this.

Would like to replace the 3/4 Chuck on Jet Drill Press

Grizzly sells a nice variety of quality chucks at good prices. Look at the numbers on the chuck you have to determine what to buy. You should remove and re-use the taper from your present chuck. You probably have a Morse #2 taper up into the spindle like the picture shown below. I assume you know 92bb256.jpghow to get that out of the spindle. What is not shown in this picture is the taper that is inserted into the chuck. This is probably a Jacobs taper. To separate that you need to support the chuck in a vise with the long taper pointing down. Put something below it to catch it without damage when it falls out. Open the chuck as far as it will go. Get a bolt (about 3/8) that you can hit with a hammer inside the chuck straight down to knock the taper out of the back of the chuck.

How do I replace the chuck on a bosch 1199vsr?

If there is a chuck bolt in the center (where the bit goes) remove it (left hand thread). The chuck is threaded onto the splindle(right hand thread). On some of those drills they have a small hole in the housing that lines up with a hole in the spindle. Put a pin punch in to lock the shaft so you can unthread the chuck. If you clamp a 3/8" allen wrench in the chuck it acts as a good handle. If there are no holes to lock the chuck, if you lay the drill on a bench and give the allen wrench a sharp blow with a rubber mallet it will unthread the chuck. If the chuck is damaged and will not hold an allen key you will have to cut the spindle off and replace the chuck and spindle.

Hope that helps

The racheting sound is the result of the torque setting indicated on the dial before the chuck. Set the dial to the drill bit icon, or all the way past the highest number, and that locks out the torque...

Is the ratcheting sound when you are using it to drill or when you use the drill to tighten the chuck. If it is when using to drill then the gearbox might be bad, how much movement is in the spindle. Hold the drill and move the chuck up and down and any excessive movement could indicate the gearbox might be broken in half. If it the chuck when tightening some of their chucks have a click type of noise especially when newer. Let me know and I will try and help more if you need it.

Delta 8' table top drill press

If the spindle is tapered, and you have a tapered chuck, it is a interference fit. You can move the table out of the way for swinging room and smack it on with a mallet. Or you can block the chuck up on the table and force the spindle into it.
Both spindle should be smooth and clean, sometimes if a drill bit grabs and stops it will twist the chuck off and gall up the taper surfaces. Put some chalk dust on the spindle before assembling if you have some, it will help prevent galling should the chuck come off

Drill Presses Installation

Here are a few instructions to follow while installing a Drill Press: Fix the column support to the base using the three screws provided. Slide the table clamp onto the column and align the table with the base and secure it in position using the table clamp lock. Place the head assembly onto the column and slide it down the column as far as possible. Align the head with the table and base and tighten the head locking grub screws with the hex key. Fit the depth scale. Attach the feed wheel. Secure the feed wheel in place with the cap screw using the hex key. Fit the chuck safety shield over the collar of the spindle nose and tighten the clamp screw. Carefully clean out the tapered hole in the chuck and the spindle taper using a clean cloth. Hinge up the shield. Push the chuck onto the spindle and lightly tap the chuck with a piece of wood to ensure proper fitting.
