sounds like inverter board. What it sounds like is happing is your LCD is working ut the backligkt board that allows you to see is kicking off. (as you still have sound) Which could be the (most likely) inverter board, or the power supply board. You can take apart and check for voltage at your power supply. The power supply has a pigtail with large white wires and a connector. Power up with the center back cover off and check your voltage at the white connector on the power supply before and after the screen gos out. If there is no large voltage loss it is your inverter board.

My RCA did the same thing just after the warranty ran out. I was told by a friend that it could be the switch on the tv that needs replacing, so he will be looking at it, and I'll let you know if that may be the case.

SOME dvd players have a small hole in the front... just large enough for an opened up paper clip to fit into. If yours has this, unplug your machine and insert an unfolded paper clip into this hole and gently press the mechanical eject switch. If you don't have this feature, your only hope is to disassemble the bottom of your set and spin the eject motor by hand to remove your disk.

LCD TV?
There are two places to look for the problems, the backlight inverter board and the power supply. Look at the power supply first since it is easier to get to, look for burnt parts, bad capacitors, etc. Look for 5vdc, 12vdc, and 24dvc.

on some dvd players and surround sound systems have a thing called DRC (dynamic range compression) you can us that and it will help it a little. i have come across the same problem but im after a digital on to run with plex or vlc on a mac. im having to route it through protools to use a compressor on there, but thats eating my resources.
