Question about Bernina Artista 180

Can I use compressed air to clean out my Bernina? The needle is getting stuck when I try to use the decorative switches and I thought maybe everything was just too dirty. It is okay to use and can I use any machine oil on it or do I have to buy a special kind? Thanks

It is sewing machine oil that I bought at a fabric store so that should be okay. It will sew a few stitches and then the needle will stay in the up position for a few stitches. I am trying to quilt a certain stitch so I don't know if maybe that stitch is not one intended for this heavy duty use. Thanks!

Unfortunately I already used it. My machine seems to be working better but I will be taking it to the only dealer 2 hours away to be serviced sometime soon. I wish I would have seen your advice sooner! Thanks anyways!

Yes, you can use compressed air. However, bear in mind that the debris must go somewhere and, without the outer shells removed, it may go where it will interfere with the mechanical parts.

What do you mean by "getting stuck"?

Use only sewing machine oil, not 3 in 1 oil.

When the machine is feeding the fabric while the needle bar stays up, the machine is in Bsating Mode.

If the basting stitch is not selected and the needle bar stays up, the basting clutch on the needle bar is sticking. The clutch and pin are inside the machine and not easily accessible.

Can you pull the needle bar down manually? (It's spring loaded)

Turn the machine off and rotate the handwheel. Does the needle bar go up and down?

If not, you'll need to take it to someone who knows how to repair this problem. Most of the time it is an easy fix, but can get extremely complicated requiring explicit knowledge of the solution. I know how to do this but it's nearly impossible to convey in words.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! Do not use compressed air from a can you may use compressed air from a compressor; however the best solution would be to go to a local shop that carries notions and see if they sell the vaccumm attachments for cleaning out your sewing machine/serger. Trust me on this I'm a certified Bernina, Viking, Brother, and Pfaff service tech.

Its working maybe not timed anymore sometimes its the same way like a mode-select switch on the timed intake of a function on a videorecorder when its getting dirthy contacts it will function so that it worked in the wrong way outside the borders of the end of the circuit and can caused several damage or have only a missing link. but beware to take the problem that caused the problem out on this otherwise it is only for a short while suc6

Bernina 1630 Can't adjust stitch length - any ideas.

Hm, the 1630's are still mechanical machines with some electronics, right? Could be the mechanics have seized due to old oil solidifying and preventing things from moving like they should. This is the method I've used on completely mechanical Berninas that have seized. (Use caution in not getting oil on the computer components!)

I cant get my stitch Width Zig zag knob to turn om my bernina record 930. Any one have this problem?

Most likely because your machine has not been serviced (oiled & cleaned) in a long time and the old oil has turned to glue and seized. This is probably the most common problem with mechanical sewing machines. A mechanical sewing machine should be regularly maintained..ie every 40 hours of sewing use or at least every six months when not in use. You may want to take it to a Bernina service technician. Ask for a bottle of Bernina oil for CB hook machines and ask if they will show you how to oil it.

Bernina knob wont work

What exactly do you mean? The knob that raises and lowers the feet? If so, I suggest you look at it carefully..even take a magnifing glass to it. There may be thread, or something else stuck in there. If so, try to catch it with tweezers..carefully! Also make SURE your machine is unplugged! If this isn't it..I would have to suggest taking it to your dealer.

Why does machine sew then stop after maybe 8 or 10 stitches?

You obviously have a faulty machine take it back to your dealer where you bought or directly contact Bernina.
Best wishes.

Needle doesn't hold in place bernina 140

It sounds like the needle clamp may be broken, or maybe have something stuck in it. Try viewing with a small mirror underneath to see if you can observe anything. Might need a new clamp.

If fabric does not feed through, check the feed dogs to see if they are working. On some machines, they can be lowered for embroidery, which disables them. If so, should be a switch to raise them again.

The needle is getting stuck in the fabric on my Bernina 1008.

Sounds like it needs to be serviced. Needle should NOT be hitting the bobbin case.

Since you don't want to have it serviced, you might check to make sure the bobbin case is inserted correctly and that the bobbin rotates clockwise as you are looking directly at it in the case. Also, is you needle compatible with the fabric?

Bernina 1090 only sewing backwards

1.Turn the bobbin winder off.
2.You have to reverse the wires on the carbon brushes.

3.Make sure that you have the needle in correctly- with the flat side to the back. Those machines rarely go out of time.

Bernina Artista 630 Turns Itself Off

My troubleshooting would involve taking it in to a Bernina certified technician as it would involve pulling off the covers of your machine for a look. Often this can be the cause of overheating due to high levels of lint build up from people using compressed air to blow out their machine (compressed air is notorius for blowing lint into other areas of the machine) I have also seen the odd plug end swell because customers use harsh cleaning products and it will then not seat properly.
