Question about Kenmore 96422 / 96424 / 96429 Electric Kitchen Range

2 Answers

Oven vent I own a Kenmore Range 96422. We've had it for just a year and love it until now. We were baking a ham (for about 4 hours) and noticed the panel where the knobs are was turning yellow. (Our range is white.) We now have a big yellow stain which will not come out on the panel. The oven vents right under the panel and we are assuming that's where it came from. It looks horrible and won't come off. I just had my kitchen totally remodeled and now this! Sears wants me to pay $100 to have a service tech come out and probably tell me there's a yellow stain from the vent! Has anyone heard about this and what can I do? Thanks for your help.

We also just bought a Kenmore Range in January 07. same model it is just one month over the warranty and it has a yellow stain on front panel where the knobs are and also the paint has blistered and is now down to the bear metal. We are having Sears come in a look at it and get back to us. The technician was in today and seems to have the attitude we bought it so it is our problem

When I used the self cleaning oven feature, the hot air vented onto the control panel (above the stove part of the oven, in the back) and melted the enamel off the control panel under one of the knobs. This looks terrible.

It would be better if it only turned yellow, but all the enamel came off. Anyone know a way to fix this, or is this a design flaw and it will require me to replace the oven when I need to spruce up the kitchen to sell the house.

I just had the same thing happen to me. I cooked a ham for around 4 hours and now the range top is stained near the knobs where the vent is located! The problem is that it is a no-fingerprint stainless steel range. The area which is stained now has a clear coat over which is also peeling. Has anyone come up with a solution yet?

Same stain here too. Sears online only offers to have someone come out for a charge to look at it. We haven't even been brave enough to use the self-clean feature, afraid it will cause furthur damage or start a fire.

If you're thinking of buying from Sears or Kenmore, be sure to do lots of research online. Their problems are many for all appliances!

A couple of weeks ago I smelled a burning smell from the kitchen and smoke was coming out of the vent and the paint was melting off of the metal. Now the back has a brown stain where the knobs are - it is ruined esthetically and I am afraid of the potential fire hazard.

The vent area and knobs are turning yellow. The enamel has also burned off. We have had the range for about two years.

Exact same problem here as well. Yellow burn stain, enamel paint rubs off when we tried to clean the first time. Now we know it's burned. Would think Kenmore would offer some solution to this. Not saying much for them anymore I guess!

I talked to Sears Customer Service (who seemed to have heard of the problem) and they gave me Kenmore's number. The

There is no recall for the oven, but the person on the phone told me there was a design enhancement / adjustment that would stop the condensation on the back panel. The person I spoke with at Kenmore said there was a related product bulletin SF22-727 (for model 79095412102), but that that was only available to the technicians.

However, once the back panel is melted/yellow -then I think it needs replacing and I think that part costs about 100 in addition to the design adjustment.

I decided it was cheaper to buy a newer (used) oven than have the vent fixed/panel replaced.

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that I bought a Kenmore stove in 2007 and the back panel above vent turned yellow and I could not get stain out. Techician came in and looked at it and agreed to change back panel, but told us he would be back in a few months as he pretty well is busy changing these before warranty goes off. We refused to have this happen so returned stove to Sears after much controversy. We ended up buying a different make of stove. I figured Kenmore would rectify problem and perhaps Sears would not sell this stove as they admitted to the problem. In 2009 I again purchased a Kenmore stove for my daughter as a gift to her moving into new home. No one at Sears told me there might be a problem with this stove. Sure enough we now have another stove with a yellow stain on control panel. Sears will do nothing but go through the whole thing of having technician come in etc. etc. When I asked why they didn't warn me as I had already had problem two years ago. My answer was If I told you and my manager heard me I would get fired. Thanks Sears for your honesty!!!!!!!!

Yes. Unplug the range, remove the screws, holding the element, remove element, disconnect wires on the ends of the element. Installation is the same in reverse. Complete model number is needed for the part# of the element

I have the same problem with the same exact model. Any helpful troubleshooting tips would be much appreciated. I'm not sure if this is a heat sensor problem or a problem with the control board.

Anyone have any ideas?

Kenmore range

Ours did that too. Grease and smoke gets in under the plastic and corrodes the circuits in the controller. At first the F1 would show up every couple weeks, then it became permanent. We did have to replace the circuit assembly. Yes make sure the vents are working, and keep the front of the panel clean.

How do I clean the inside of the door window of my self-cleaning oven?

Steam cleaners work best because they don't need chemical cleaners which will leave an odor. There are several handheld styles available. Google search "handheld steam cleaners" to find one you like.
