I took it to a canon dealer who was going to charge me £70 just to diagnose the problem and then charge further for parts and labour. I decided to see if I can fix it myself. I've come accross the problem of the flash not working once or twice before when the batteries were getting flat. This problem was previously fixed when I used recharged batteries. The A640 uses AA batteries and I bought some rechargeable 2700mAh ones (give very good battery life). Recharged batteries didn't fix the problem this time though. I then decided to use a set of precision screw drivers which I'd bought from a £ shop and undid the screws on the bottom of the camera. I noticed that two of them were rather loose anyway. I then screwed them back in rather tightly. PROBLEM FIXED! My camera worked as it did before and the flash was working fine. It might have been a fluke but I have been screwing my camera into a tripod rather tightly hence the bottom of the camera may have come loose. Tightening the screws fixed the problem.

I have canon a640 camera. I am getting problem regarding taking pictures as the flash is not working. I have tried it on Auto mode, Portrate, landscape and others the result is same. Please help me in...

make sure the dial at the top of the camera is set to AUTO or the green camera icon. When you are in position to take a picture, press the left button on the circle pad on the back of the camera; it should look like a SQUIGGLY ARROW this is the sign for flash. that button should turn it on, off, at automatic based on the current lighting.
Hope this helps!

I have a canon powershot a640 but it only takes pictures if the flash is off. How do i fix this ?

Sounds like the flash capacitor is not charging. Usually the cause is a blown fuse. This is a hardware problem, not software, and the only solution is to take it apart and replace the fuse (it's a SMD fuse and it has to be soldered). Sometimes the problem is with the flash board. I'm afraid you will have to give it to a camera technician. I could help you with the repair, but I'm in Germany.

My camera's flash is not working and the icon of flash keeps blinking every time i try to click a photo. Also the camera works fine when I switch off the flash.

If its blinking then it meas that it is not adequately charged. The flash indicator will turn to steady orange if its properly charged.

I cannot take a picture with the flash on (the flash mode is on automatic and I use fresh batteries). The camera seems to operate OK when flash is turned off. Who can I fix the problem?

I'd go to the Canon website. Follow links for support and downloads, see if there's a firmware upgrade for your camera. If not or it doesn't resolve the problem, then check if there's a forum on the site or even email their techs. for advice.

Flash indicator blinks and camera will not take the shot.

Mine was doing the exact same thing until just a few minutes ago. I read some tips on here about taking it apart and then putting it back togeather. That was all they did, except on got shocked... so I thought maybe things had come loose so I tapped it soundly against my palm. 2 times and the orange light resumed working and 4 times and the flash worked again. It's 4 years old and not much good to me without the flash so I thought it was worth the risk. I am so glad it worked.

Falsh Problem with Power Shot a640

I had the exact same problem. You'll need to send it back to Canon. It'll cost you $87-94, but they'll clean it up, get the flash working, and make it new again. It's a good camera worth getting fixed.

Canon A640 flash problem

I sent my camera into Canon for repair. They said the flash was malfunctioning, and there was something wrong with the flash exposure control. The repair cost about $87. It took approximately 10 days from the time I sent the camera in until the time I got it back.
