Thanks guys. You guys are so quick. Anyway the battery does charge perfectly when it is in the other laptop. As you said I have the same feeling that there must be something wrong with the mother board. Looks like I'm gonna open it up and take a look at it by myself.

Does the battery accept a charge from the another laptop ?, the only way you will know if this is happening is to run the battery down till it warns the laptop it is failing and them plug it into the other machine

If the battery re-charges then it is fine, if not you need to replace it

If your machine works with the AC but the battery stays flat then you have a fault on the onboard circuit that trickle charges the battery and you need a techie

If you are going inside the laptop take some precautions

Remove the battery and the power cable before taking out any of the Ram or Processors

Look at the input for the mains supply , the charger circuit will be close by

It is worth getting a plastic probe to gently press the components in that area to see if it is a dry joint on the base of a resistor, they normally put some quite big ones in there to handle the current.

    Final comment

The old charger may be outputting enough current to run the laptop but cannot handle the combined load.

Without test equipment to monitor the voltage and amperage you are up a gum tree and your swop out method is the best diagnosis.

Would appreciate some marks on the transaction

    Ps

I am still trying to come to terms with the other guys statement re watch batteries and take it to a shop and tell me what they said

I had this experience. O(_)O
YOUR battery maybe meets its deadlines!
It is the same situation as what faced in the past few weeks! My battery has been used for years!
Generally speaking, our laptop battery also has its deadline for 1 year. After using it over the battery for 1 years, it will drop to about 60-70 percents of its capacity.
Why not order another laptop battery replacement for bring more convenience?

Probably the power charging circuit on the motherboard.
The question is, does the battery actually charge, no matter what the screen says? If it's a Dell charger, a Dell battery, then it should work. Some 3rd party batteries cause this message, but in actuality, the batteries seem to charge for the most part.

Dell latitude d500 wont charge.

If the original batteryand the system works on AC power, then replace the battery.

If the battery has been replaced, then it could be a motherboard charger failure

Bought a x300 latitude dell laptop. Powers on with ac power adapter, but batteries will not charge even when left plugged in for 6 hours or more. Could it be a bad motherboard??

It could be a faulty battery or a faulty charging circuit.
Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and recharge cycles. There capacity reduces with age until they reach a stage where they won't charge at all.

I have a Dell Studio laptop. Will power on with

This should have a "battery check" button on the battery itself. Remove the battery and press the button. If it reveals that the battery is not fully charged, or you cannot get it to take full charge, perhaps all that you need is a new battery. If the battery is failing the check the system makes on it at boot, it won't.

I don't know how to charge my battery

Its ok. Um just leave the battery plugged into your laptop and the power cord plugged into the laptop as well and the laptop will charge it for you. If it won't, the battery is no good and get a new one but you don't need a external battery charger to charge your laptop battery.

Dell Latitiude 1100 Will not boot has poweron issue

I also have a dell inspiron 1100. It seems that it has overheated, and your motherboard or CPU has fried, or died from the heat. What you say sounds like a motherboard failure

There is currently an ongoing lawsuit. Also, take my advice, and instead of trying to fix it, you're better of getting a new computer, as the dell is getting old anways. I spent some extra cash and got myself a vaio.
