Serious question??

Spools on almost all of the recently made trimmers do not have a separate cover. They're attached by pushing down and twisting them clock-wise. When you hear them snap into place, let up and its on. To take one off its just the opposite...push down it down and twist them counter-clockwise.
Hope this helps.

How to replace the string in grasshog xp electric trimmer

Ran into the same problem recently and discovered that one solution was to use a standard adjustable wrench and grasp the center, leveraging off the spool cover. If you look closely at the spool it is tapered so the very top of the hole in it is actually slightly smaller that the spool cover point it slides over letting it seal pretty tight over time.

String won't advance automatically. Thank you so much for any assistance! It's a Black & Decker ST 7000 edger/trimmer.

There is a rachet mechanism at the bottom of the spool. make sure the spool is seated fully. Also make sure the string isn't wound too tight or it will stick and not advance.

ST 4000 corded

could be the spring, could be not setting right in the spool causeing the spindle to think its being pushed down when its not. causeing it to spit out the line.

check that and if you have another spool kicking around please grab that as well for testing the unit. could also be the spool itself try cleaning that out as well if it looks too dirty.

Replacing the string on trimmer

I don't think you have to get the housing off for replacing the spool purpose. Usually, take the spool cover first, and then you will be able to take the spool out of spool housing.
