Question about Amana 24 in. ADB1500AW Built-in Dishwasher
Amana dishwasher ADB1500AWB -- door has been difficult to open for several weeks (could squeeze handle but latch wouldn't disengage easily). Finally today the latch broke altogether; door will no longer latch closed. Is this something we can order a part for and fix ourselves, and if so how do we go about this? Thanks!

Please check whether the plastic pins are broken.
I removed the inner door panel and found the handle broken. It has integrally molded plastic pins that provide a pivot for the handle to push against the release assembly. These were broken off. Also noticed that there were some small fingers molded on the back of the switch panel that were snapped off. I'm not sure what these are for and I can't see how they are needed for the latch operation. My hunch is that they aid in positioning the handle during factory assembly. I'm NOT going to buy a new switch panel to replace these!
I don't know why the handle broke but it did so in stages. I think one pin broke, and then everything else broke because of added misalignment and stress. The good news: a new handle only costs about $10 and I'll have it in a couple of days. Thanks

We have the same problem and I bought the latch locally for $26.00 now trying to figure out exactly how to get the door apart to replace.

Hello, welcome to FixYa.
I understand by reading your post which indicates it is a Amana ADB1500AWB dishwasher (built by Maytag as you may or may not know) you appear to have a concern with...in your words,
"makes a loud grinding and squealing noise that freaks out my wife... Dishes are still clean"
First and most importantly by far is reassure your wife it's gonna be O.K. ;-)
Based on this it sounds like something is either loose or broke or jemmed in the chopper/impeller sump area.
**turn off the power to the unit before performing any service please...safety first**
If you think are capable, I would investigate beneath the filters and see if perehaps a piece of glass, bone etc is against the chopper blade causing the noise and we can go from there.
I'll watch for your reply and try and help going forward in any manner I can of course. Thank you.
