Dell optiplex gx110 733mhz won't recognise another hard drive

Dell optiplex gx110 733mhz
I have a 10 gb drive. I want to install a larger drive but in the setup I can see no way to enter new settings for a larger drive. There are quite a lot of default settings, but they don't work. I have tried to ghost my drive to a lager drive but even this does not work for this computer.
The current settings are:
Capacity 10mb (a 10gb is installed)
Cylinders 306
Heads 4
Sectors 17

I have tried to reset this to install a larger hard drive: 20 gb
Settings:
Capacity 20.49gb
Cylinders 16383
Heads 16
Sectors 63

It doesn't recognise any other harddrive for me to use the reinstall windows XP disk.

Its a computer for the girls to use msn and it would be nice to have more space.
Any help would be appreciated, even if I could copy the hard drive. I don't under stand why it will not clone. I have 2 dells and they are the same.

After installing the new boards restart your computer and it should recognise the new boards and install the drivers for them. They'll have to come from the internet most likely.

Unless Dell has the upgrade for the bios to include the larger hardware you are going to be in trouble, I would go online to Dell and check for upgrades to your model if they still support it. The other option is contact customer and technical support to see it they can give you a alternative solution.

The maximum hard drive you can install depends upon the BIOS. You MAY BE able to install a larger hard drive if the BIOS upgrade will allow it. I suggest you go to the Gigagyte WEB site to check on this possibility.

I have a dell optiplex gx 620 put in with new wd sata 500gb hard drive but will only show 130 gb

maybe the hard drive is not yet recognized by the system. try to reformat your hard drive by using disc management. got to control panel, performance and maintenance, administrative tools, computer management. under storage, click disc management, right click on the new hard disc drive and click format.

Dell Optiplex GX1 not recognizing all hard drives.

Hello,
If you connect the drives using one single ribbon cable with two connectors on it then you need to set the drives to Master/Slave using the jumpers on the drives. Master being your OS drive.
If you are running a very old Operating System, make sure it can support a 20GB drive.

Optiplex GXS 240 Dell. After 6 years of hard work

Hi,
Run the onboard diagnostics on the hardrives and system memory before doing the OS reinstall.
Instructions on how to run diagnostics are given below

Another workaround you can try is disconnect one hardrive from the computer and install the OS and then put the additional harddrive

Thanks for using Fixya
