Question about Carrier CARH09K Air Conditioner

Heat pump not cooling after 1 hour

My carrier air conditioning wasn't putting out cool air. Then I cleaned the coil. It had a lot of hair and gunk on the coil. It runned for 3 days then quit again. I cleaned the coil again with the acid cleaner and now it will run for 1 hour then quit cooling the house. It still runs good, just won't cool the house. I was told that a flash light should be able to shine through the coil. Is this true, what do you think my problem is?

Yes it is true . Sound like you are low on freon the unit is shutting off on the low pressure switch or high pressure switch is the outside unit clean ?you may need service. Tom

A Great Tip For Saving Money


While everyone usually remembers to change their AC and Heater filters, no one thinks about cleaning the heating or cooling outdoor coil. If you have an outdoor unit for heating or cooling, those coils need to be clean too!!

The principle of an HVAC unit is to remove heat or cold from your home to make sure you have a comfortable temperature inside.

If you have a gas furnace, your good to go in the winter. Make sure you change your filter every month and you should be able to keep your home at an nice temperature for you and your family. BUT, if you have an air conditioning unit hooked up to cool your house in the spring and summer, you need to do a little maintenance every spring to make sure you get the most out of your unit and save money. The same principle works for a heat pump, so i'll break it down for each unit.

1. An air conditioning unit that has a gas heater works just like it sounds. In the winter, your thermostat will tell the heater to turn on. You will have your burner running until the fan switch in the heat exchanger gets to the right temperature to turn the fan on. This is so you don't have cold air circulating through the house. Cooling on the other hand works a little different. If your thermostat calls for cooling, your fan will turn on right away and your condensing unit outside will turn on. What you AC is doing is removing heat inside the house and putting it somewhere else. That;s where your condensing unit comes in. The heat you removed inside the house is transferred outside where it is compressed and cooled through the use of the outdoor fan.

Now, imagine if this outdoor unit has dirty coil. You are no longer able to remove the heat from the house because it's not able to be removed because of a dirty coil. This means a huge loss in cooling capacity, higher running amperage on the compressor, and your electric bill being alot larger than it needs to be. I'll have the solution after I address the heat pump.

2. Now, the heat pump. It is basically an air conditioning unit that can reverse. In the summer, the outdoor unit will blow hot because of the heat it removed in the house. In the winter, the outdoor unit will be blowing cold because it is using the heat outdoors to add heat into your house. While this sounds weird, it's engineering at it's best. In the winter, heat is able to be removed from very low temperatures and your able to transfer heat into the house because you have a compressor in your unit. It does what it says. It takes a low pressure-low temperature refrigerant and compresses it into a high pressure-high temperature refrigerant.

Now, getting to the coils of both units. You need to clean the outdoor coil on both units every spring to make sure you have a clean coil. In the long run, this will allow the unit to expell the heat gained from the house and in the long run will add life to your compressor and save you money.

On the heat pump, you'll also need to clean the coil every fall. This is because if you don't, you could have a problem with freezing your outdoor coil. If you can't remove the heat from indoors, you will slowly turn your outdoor coil into an icemaker!!

So, based on what you have, turn the power off to your outdoor unit. Spray very good with a degreaser such as simple green and let it sit for about a half an hour. Then, grab your hose and wash out the coil. You'll be amazed what comes out. Let it sit for a coup0le hours to dry out, then turn the unit on.

This will not only extend the life of your compressor, it will also save you money in the long run!!

What is a condenser?
Is a device or unit used to condense vapor into liquid. A condenser is simply one component of an air conditioner. Whether you have an outdoor air conditioner or a window unit air conditioner your air conditioner contains a condenser.
Condensers are used in outdoor air conditioning systems as well as heat pump systems. Condensers in an air conditioning unit have very few controls. They will have an on and off switch. Occasionally these air conditioners will also have a brown out option. This option shuts down the compressor when the electrical current is low.
A condenser is simply a heat exchanger. It compresses refrigerants into a hot gas to then condense them into a liquid. A condenser is a major component in a air conditioning or heat pump unit. It moves air across the coils to facilitate the transfer of heat.
In a heat pump unit the condenser has a few more features. It will have a reverse valve that allows the unit to switch back and forth between air conditioning and heating. Even when the unit is heating, it uses the condenser for defrosting the coils. If the coils become layered with frost it will effect the units effectiveness this is defrosted when the reverse valve switches to air conditioning mode to move the hot gases through the coils melting the built up ice. It will automatically switch back to heating mode once the ice is cleared to once again heat the home.
To keep your unit in good operating condition it is vital to keep the area around the condenser clear of all debris as well as keeping the filter clear of dust and dirt. A clean machine makes a happy machine. A happy machine will keep you cool during the summer months and warm during the cold months. It is suggested to change the units filters when they become dirty, depending on your area and conditions near your home this may be as often as once a month or as seldom as every 3 to 6 months. You will have to pay close attention to your units needs to decide the right time to change or clean your unit’s filters.
It is very important no matter what type of unit you have to prevent the blockage of the condenser. If the condenser becomes block it can effect the units efficiency or even cause the until to completely fail. For this reason it is one of the most important components of a cooling or heating system. A condenser allows the maximum airflow to the unit.

Ice on coils of heat pump not cooling


Which coil?, indoor or out? Indoor coils freeze due to clogged filters, low freon, blower motor not working. Outdoor coil freezing could mean, in rare cases in cooling mode, reversing valve not shifting.

Can I switch my blower speed on my carrier 9300ts to high? The airflow out of my registers is extremely low. I didn't know if gas heat - high had anything to do with the blower motor speed or not. I...


Dear Friend! Blower doesn't produce any cool or heat. It's circulating or spreading out the air for which mode it's supported. (cool or heat).
Clean the coil and the blower wheel which are under dust blocked. You will get better throw in low speed itself. Do it and then write, if it's helpful. Thanks.

Air condition not cooling


If this is a heat pump it sounds like the reversing valve is stuck in the heat mode, replacing it requires opening the sealed system, which needs to be done by a licensed ac repairman.

Central air conditoner unit doesnt blow cool air into home has some ice on the inlet heat and cooling lines going into the central air unit


Change the furnace filter. Make sure you use a cheap one when air conditioning, as the better ones restrict airflow when they filter out so much stuff and then plug up, not allowing enough air to pass over the cooling coil in the furnace's air plenum. Turn the A/C off for a few hours (with only the furnace fan on if possible) to melt the ice off the cooling unit inside the furnace.

Your inside cooling coil in the air conditioning mode could be frozen over. Change the fan setting to on and operate it that way when in the cooling mode. Turn the air conditioning OFF with the fan ON to clear the coil of frost which should take about 1 hour.

The fact that you have sweat on the large line means that the temperature of the gas inside the line is below the due point of the moisture in the air. A good tech would measure the pressures and temperature of the system to get what is called superheat to determine proper system charge of refrigerant.
