Replaced light bulbs, lights still don't work

The unit is over five years old, and mounted above my range. One of the lamps went out, so opened it up and attempted to unscrew the dead lamp. Upon unscrewing the dead lamp, the glass separated from the screw base. For some stupid reason, I hit the light button on the microwave, and assume I popped a fuse with one old lamp and the broken off base in the other socket. I then replaced both of the original lamps in the bottom of the unit (I had it open anyway).

Is there a fuse in the unit for the lights? Everything else on the unit works just fine.

This may have already been dealt with, but others can benefit from an accurate, thoughtful reply to this problem.

We see this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, linked here on Fixya:

If the microwave light bulb is not working it is usually located behind the upper grille and behind an access panel, and above the lower panel. On counter top units you will need to remove the outer cover to get to the bulb. If that doesn't solve the problem check the on-off switch, and control board

Main Control Board

If the microwave light bulb is not working check the light bulbs, sockets and wiring. If they are good the main control board might be defective.

Light Bulb Socket

If the microwave light bulb is not working and a new light bulb doesn't solve the problem, the light bulb socket might be burned out and need to be replaced.

Hello - This may or may not be specifically for your model, however these are generics instructions that I found.

To replace the light bulb to the over the range microwave you will need to follow the steps below:

1. To replace light bulb, first disconnect power to the microwave oven at the circuit breaker panel or by unplugging.

2. Remove the vent grill mounting screws.

3. Pull the vent grill away from the unit.

4. Remove the charcoal filter by pushing it inwards, then turn and pull it away from the unit.

5. Open light cover located behind filter mounting by carefully pulling up on the front edge.

6. Remove old light bulb and replace only with equivalent 30 watt bulb available from part distributor. Bulbs are also available at most hardware stores or lighting centers.

7. Replacing the microwave oven light cover by carefully pushing into place. Replace the charcoal filter. Push the vent grill back into place (engaging both the bottom and top tabs) and replace the vent grill mounting screws.

Same Problem - Suddenly Died ~2yrs old, very light use.

Probably a fuse inside the unit. Can be caused by overheating or by door switches not working properly.

Maytag MMV5165AAS work surface light won't work. I bought a new light and replaced the old one but it still will not turn on. THe microwave display goes thought the cycle of High, Low, Off but nothing...

If the lamp socket has power (and it's the right voltage) and the replacement lamp is the correct one and tests good, then the trouble is in the socket. It may have been damaged when the original lamp went "poof." Check for damaged contacts (burnt or broken off). Also, make sure you're seating the lamp correctly in the socket. If the bulb is a push-and-turn ("bayonet") type, you may be facing it the wrong way and it's not going all the way in.

Replacement bulbs still do not work

Most electronic control boards have undersized circuit wires that can't handle a catastrophic lamp failure. The circuit trace will open like a fuse. If you or someone knows how to use a soldering iron, this can be repaired.
1. Remove the top grille. (Two screws on top)
2. Remove screw above button panel. Push up on panel to remove.
3. Remove circuit board from panel. Look on reverse side for open circuit trace.
4. Repair circuit trace...lights work again....

If you need further assistance, let me know

On the electronic control board, the circuit trace will open like a fuse if the light bulb power becomes shorted. If you or someone knows how to use a soldering iron, this can be repaired.
1. Remove the top grille. (Two screws on top)
2. Remove screw above button panel. Push up on panel to remove.
3. Remove circuit board from panel. Look on reverse side for a burned, open circuit trace.
4. Repair circuit trace everything should work again....

I'm guessing that nothing is that right? If so, first guess is the breaker or an internal fuse. Nearly all units have them. You don't say what fuse you checked. Unplug the unit, remove the bulb and see what is in the socket. Next, open the breaker and then turn it back on. This will reset it. Something caused this.

GE microwave interior light bulb replacement.

It's pretty simple as long as you have an offset phillips screwdriver...

Of course, be sure to disconnect power to microwave and be sure not to touch the new halogen bulb with fingers.

First, remove upper vent panel and remove inner filter (same directions for just replacing inner carbon filter):

Then, remove inner plastic grille (2 screws) and final screw on left side of metal "air duct" - here's where you'll need the offset screw driver (and a little patience!):

Then, you can gently lift the sheet metal panel, find the light housing, squeeze and remove/replace :)

That's it...just replace bulb and reverse for reassembly. Be sure to keep track of screw locations there are various sizes/lengths used.

Just so I understand, you replaced the fuse inside the oven? If so, I would suspect a bad thermostat attached to the magnetron. This device interrupts power when the unit gets too hot. I've included a representative photo. After so many years your magnetron may be bad, too. Once you get the oven working, if it cooks and doesn't trip the thermostat again, it may be okay. PLUS - It looks like this model has manual rotary controls. If so, it's common for those to develop bad contacts after so many years. I would consider that my third suspect. Those controls are called the thermostat (not to be confused with other part by that name that I discussed above) and the selector switch. One could easily be bad. You can check part prices at Sears online at (the "3" is supposed to be there) Some other things that can cause a "dead" condition: - bad connections on the small circuit board where the fuse is mounted (if such a board is present) - bad connections in the wiring Good luck.
